Hitch a Free Ride

Posted: 09 Sep 2008 03:45 AM CDT

A belt with three GIANT suction cups for you to hitch onto anything. That’s exactly what the Hitch concept is by designer Robert Nightingale. He believes in a free world where opportunistic travelers just latch themselves onto moving vehicles. The triple load vacuum suction cups are strong enough to keep you from flying off. As the designer puts it. . .

For best results position yourself at traffic lights, railway stations or air hangers. Subtly wait for the opportune moment (which is precisely 7 seconds before the initial point of acceleration) and attach the product as firmly as possible to the host vehicle (a brief run up usually does the trick), paying attention to ground clearance for ones feet and enjoy the ride…

d°light Huggable Review. I Miss My Glowworm

Posted: 09 Sep 2008 03:27 AM CDT

Diana Lin Design LLC designs and manufacturers award-winning products that push the boundaries of innovative design techniques such as their dÂșlight Huggable pillow. How excited was I when I opened a package to a glowing pillow!

You may have seen it making the rounds in blogs and magazines a few months ago but actually touching one and squishing it is a different experience. The shell is just a thick mesh fabric holding in an armful of silicon gel balls each with its own LED. There’s a pull string in the back to turn on the lights. It’s powered by a couple of AA’s but also comes with a small ac adapter.

Impractical? Just a little. Although it’s soft, it’s much heavier than a normal batting stuffed pillow but that’s not the point. It’s more decor than functional pillow - something to slink on the couch whenever guests visit. It’s definitely a conversational starter inviting curiosity with oohs and ahhs. Everyone wants to touch it as they try to figure out what’s inside.

To my surprise the pillow doesn’t get hot. In fact it doesn’t even get warm. After all, LEDs produce a lot of heat but these are low powered so it seems that negates any awkward sensations. It also seems to last quite awhile. I’ve left the pillow on 48 hours straight on batteries and it’s still as bright as ever.

Design like this doesn’t come cheap. $160 is pricey but they do come in a range of colors. I like it but I just wish it were softer, closer to a plush pillow. I’m a sucker for anything that glows tho so if you’re like me, shelling out a little cash for something like this is, as Martha Stewart puts it, “a good thing”.

Paper Clips to Tell How I Feel

Posted: 09 Sep 2008 03:00 AM CDT

Just a little accessory unisex enough for anyone to wear. Clip Language are paper clips with emotive objects emphasizing an emotion. Clip it on anything to let people know how you feel. Imagine a world where the most mundane objects loosely communicate what you’re thinking without speaking a word. It’s just a novel concept but one I wouldn’t mind having in reality.

Fold Magazine Racks

Using bent, powder coated steel, Fold Magazine Racks emphasize the paper contents of a magazine. The shape is simple and lends well to its core function with a unique architectural element underscoring the design. I really like the simplicity and wouldn’t mind have all three colors in my home.

The Age of Aquarius… in Sprinkling

Posted: 08 Sep 2008 08:50 PM CDT

While automatic lawn and crop sprinklers have existed for some time, the Aquarius takes automatic watering to a new level, and in hot Apple-iMac 1998 aqua color scheme and shape. While current automatic sprinklers activate on a time-based schedule, Aquarius detects moisture levels in the soil and waters according to changing conditions. No more sprinkling in rainstorms for you!

As its designers, Aydin Oztoprak and Ozgur Ruhi Ulvan put it: “According to the soil, crop and weather characteristics [Aquarius] automatically adjusts the water flow. It is solar powered and remote managed. With its humidity sensors attached to its shaft, it detects the humidity at different levels of soil. Aquarius aims to deliver most efficient way of irrigation as agricultural irrigation consumes most of world`s water resources. Although it is an professional outdoor equipment Aquarius combines style, technology and functionality in its design.”

Although you may be frowning at those garage-sale pipe-colors, you’ll love the way Aquarius does business. And solar powered is always a plus. It seems as though it could hook to regular hosing, also, so the cost of these would probably be on the low side. I’d suggest that the next step is making them plantable, so that the solar panels are the only visible part and I could continue mowing my lawn, now that it’s forever perfectly watered, green and lush.

Aydin Oztoprak and Ozgur Ruhi Ulvan, can we get these produced by next summer?
