Is BMW Pixie A Fairy?

Posted: 21 Jul 2009 03:56 AM PDT

Monster, speedster, trailblazer, mean-machine; these are the general adjectives that accompany an automotive post on YD. Rarely do we get treated to a feminist outlook on a industry that is predominantly male. Maybe this is why I won't be as candid as AJ was in this post, but honestly, if designers spin a yarn for their designs and back them up with strong renders/sketches; the equation just doesn't sit well with the public. All I get from this BMW Pixie is that will look good in the next Midsummer's Night Dream Production!

Original Text:

My PIXIE concept aims to turn this condition of complexity into a positive mobility experience, moving you not only from A-B, but also in a theoretical way- changing your position within an ethical dimension towards recovering values that have become virtual in the last 10 years, like relationships, responsibility and active participation in society. I am approaching my design by translating the virtual back into an object/car whose main feature will be a different way of surfacing: by using porous structures to build the surface, I will achieve a bigger internal surface than on the outside, which will be used for functions like an evaporative cooling system. The architecture of the car will be up-dateable like software: the electric drive train is most likely to be out of date in a few years and therefore has to be easy to upgrade, by not integrating the battery in the hardware of the architecture. Fueling will no longer be just a matter of spending energy but creating an energy cycle, which keeps unused power available by using the existing infrastructure of streetlamps, creating an energy feedback. In other words: it is no longer about designing the surface of a car, but the values it represents as an object, not only for the users but also for the socio cultural infrastructure- so to speak a car for 'cultural movement'.

No Worries, You Can Fall

Posted: 21 Jul 2009 12:52 AM PDT

One of the biggest bnummers of any sport is the fear of injury from falls and winter sports are no different. Here is a jacket that proposes to act as a protective gear against those accidental slips on the ice, which can be really painful. The design includes an impact chamber filled with water and air that acts as a cushioning. On impact, the air is pushed up the back channel and into the dissipation chamber situated around the jacket's neck, inflating it. Wear it and show off your stunts, without fear!

Since the neck area gets inflated, it offers a certain degree of whiplash protection and support. It's a good idea to fill in drinkable water into the chamber; coz once you're knocked down you may want to replenish yourself with some.

Shaken and stirred!

Plus Chair Plus

Posted: 21 Jul 2009 12:01 AM PDT

Looks like a cut out of a stairwell! And what are stairs good for? Putting things on. The “+Chair”, designed by So Young Park, is basically a place for putting some candles on. But don’t start your hair on fire. Maybe some books are a better idea! Also the chair comes apart at all the edges, so it can be transported quite easily.

The tiny extra step near the head of the chair adds a whole’nother dimension that can hold any number of things: books, a big pillow, a bunch of marbles. While you’re here, take a look at the rest of the chairs we’ve got here at Yanko Design.

Oh I know! You could put your whiskey there!

Switch The Shampoo To Get A Radio

Posted: 21 Jul 2009 12:00 AM PDT

Video killed the radio star, but I think digital players did more damage. Call me old fashioned if you like, but I still prefer the randomness of a radio station, you can never really know which song they will play next. The Muji Bath Radio by Industrial Facility is perfect for eccentrics like me and to top it off, it serenades as a shampoo bottle! The controls are at the bottom and the top twists left or right as volume adjustment. Me really wants this…but fret… its available only in Japan.

Oh..and its a given that this piece is water resistant…..

Meditating on Cell Phone Power

Posted: 21 Jul 2009 12:00 AM PDT

From Industrial Designer Clara Zamboni from the University of Buenos Aires comes this handheld meditation power converter. Imagine Bruce Lee, trapped in the three-door-room after his nun-chuck fight on the island, just sitting there, meditating on his next move. He could have totally been charging his cellphone while he was just chillin! Twiddling thumb.

Using Nonogenerators, (link kindly provided by Clara Zamboni*), this device called Lotus is able to convert the energy you create by spinning its thumb pad into energy your cell phone can use as power. Simple and nice, naturally shaped to the contour of your hand, made to fit simply into your life.

*For all you design submitting peoples out there, it is always very helpful to explain the technologies you use in your concepts like this- a link to a credible source. This way the people who already know what it is can skip, and the people who do not can learn! Thank you Clara for being extra helpful!
