YouRail Design Contest – Visions of modern transportation by Bombardier

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 05:53 AM PST

UPDATE: Only 9 days left!

Is publishing your contents on online design communities or hosting your own portfolio site enough for creative satisfaction? Don't you want evaluation or recognition for your efforts? Much like how a post is done on YD, where we hear scores of you either trashing or praising a design, forcing the designers to re-think his strategy or go-ahead with his convictions. The Bombardier YouRail Design Contest by HYVE gives you instant feedback, allowing you to re-think your contribution or simply refining it.

The contest is really simple, you only need to register, get inspired and submit your design ideas. The contest is about the creation of new and innovative interior designs for trains. Questions like how a modern train interior should look like and what kind of innovative features should be integrated need to be solved. It is irrelevant if participants have great experience in interior design or not, the contest is addressed to professionals, students, hobby designers and everyone who is interested into the topic. The designs can be submitted drawn freehand or computer generated, by using the configuration tool or just by explaining the interior idea. Participants may either design a seat upholstery with the configuration tool or freely create an interior design to the following three topics:

  • The Leisure Passenger
  • The Business Traveler
  • The Everyday Passenger

Like I mentioned to participate you need to simply join the community and submit your own vision for interior design in trains. Or you can create your own seat cover with the 3D – configuration tool. Anyway, you can discuss and evaluate the designs of the community and win great prizes: The members with the three best freely created designs amongst all three topics win cash prizes up to 2.000 Euros. The members with the three best configured designs also win cash prizes up to 600 Euros. Plus: The members with the 4th to the 10th best freely created designs win netbooks. Hurrah!

The winning design will be built as a prototype and will be exposed on the InnoTrans 2010 in Berlin which is the leading trade fair in transportation. Besides, the designer of that winning design will be invited by Bombardier to visit the InnoTrans 2010. In addition, the most active member as well as the best freely created and configured designs according to the community evaluation are rewarded with a netbook, too. Finally, one idea will also win a netbook (and a signature book about Bombardier) by the "president's pick" where the jury select the most unconventional idea.

The jury has an impressive line-up with high-level management and design experts – get to know them here.

What is really impressive is that like our YD community, there is instant feedback and reaction to your designs by the community members. So participating in this contest really makes sense. You get evaluated not only by your contemporaries, but also by an elite panel of judges. Which other design competition can boast of this killer combo?

To know more on the contest details hit here.

The whole contest phase is being charged by the HYVE Innovation Community GmbH. HYVE is a German innovation agency dealing with customer integration into the product innovation process. Feel free to get all important information about HYVE on their website, or contact them directly.

Coffee Cup Carry

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 01:30 AM PST

You don't need to come up with something complicated to resolve a simple issue. The goal here is to cut paper consumption when we use disposable paper cartons for beverage take-aways. How do we achieve it; simply redesign the take-away sleeve. For example the "One Plus One" is a coffee cup sleeve that comes with a hooked extension, entwine it with another sleeve and you're good to carry two cups at a time. It may get a bit tricky to carry more than 2 cups at a time, stacking up 4 seems too risky. But the design is worth refining and implementing.

Better Than Disposable Plates

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 01:15 AM PST

I think Mina Song's idea for an inflatable plate called the "Air Dish" is quite a sound one. You're on a picnic and you care for the environment so you use the garbage can to dispose your used paper plates. But still that's waste of plates/resources right. Change the scene and use the vinyl Air Dish instead: inflate it, use it, rinse it, fold and stow it….no bother of disposing it anytime soon. Just be careful about pricking it.

What I mean is that with the Maestro you can fulfill your desire of being the Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra (always dream of the best!) and use the baton to gesture-control your projector. No buttons or complicated menus to navigate this beauty, only expression and an A-1 impersonation of Zubin Mehta!

Designs with GPS are On The Map!

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:39 AM PST

You know that’s what this whole thing is about, right? Designing something so spectacular, so helpful to society that it puts a picture of your face on every map. This is where they designed the product fantasique! The people in this post know what’s going on. The following is 10 unique designs whose creators knew it’d be an awesome idea to incorporate a Global Positioning System, aka, GPS.

top10gps

Look below, all ye map following adventurers! Ye shall find the treasures ye seek.

1. Scout – Portable Pedestrian Navigation Device : Designed to be your most handiest sidekick in a new situation, made for travelers who wish to access local social networks through the Scout online experience. Use scout as a seeing eyeglass to experience a whole new world of interactivity!

2. E'llipse Traveler Watch : Made to be basically a smartphone for your wrist, this high-fashion watch boasts time, weather, calendar and a custom API for a lovely experience. Not to mention the GPS locator for maps and more, omg!

3. EMIL Experience Outdoors : Might be using the simplest implementation of the GPS, better yet the most rudimentary. This compass is made for kids on a mission to play games, but boasts all the information you need to know where you’re at in the world.

4. MAPTOR Map and Projector Device : is very similar to the EMIL, only it projects with light a sort of YOU ARE HERE mall map for you that looks awfully similar to Googlemaps. Good design be jealous!

5. Visionplus sightstick for the blind : is really the hyper-version of a seeing-eye-stick. It boasts mapping capabilities, braille or numbered press-button controls, audio, and most fabulously, telescoping capability (for when you’ve just gotta show off by extending your cane.)

6. Meerkat Removable Mudguard Lock for Cycles : Whoa nelly! Let’s change gears here for a second. This lovely lady not only tracks your bike with GPS science style, it’s got a friendly analog “the rider is supposed to be this person” sort of vibe to it.

7. CODE X Luxury Power Yacht : That went well, let’s keep steering offshore! This design is a boat! Inside of the boat is a GPS-reliant “virtual anchor” system that, instead of letting down a hunk of metal, keeps the boat in place with the motors, backing or forwarding based on GPS location.

8. GPS Coin : Oh my goodness it’s got GPS right there in the title. This friendly little coin’s a flip away from your favorite restaurant. Choose two, flip the coin, and whichever one came up heads, the coin will lead you to. Win!

9. Peugeot Capsule Concept Car : An escape-pod that’ll save you from the claws of normal-life and city-life with a ton of fabulous motorcycle-esque features including built-in GPS location system.

10. 4P Extreme Sport Camera : And finally, the 4P Extreme Sport Camera. This camera does not have a built-in GPS. The device its eyeball FOLLOWS does though, of course. This camera relies on some pinpointed GPS craziness to follow the person holding the device it needs to seek in order to take amazing x-games style video. Get sponsored!

That’s all for today folks, but that was only 10! If you’re interested in GPS related projects beyond these, simply do yourself a search or click right on the GPS link to parse the Yanko Design archives!

Keeping in Touch – Get it?

This project right here is called the “Squibble Portable Braille Interface” and it’s basically a text-message machine for the seeing-impared. Or if you’re able to read Braille, you’re in luck because this’d be an amazing pocket-chatter. Love the implications!

My friend Eric taught in Dubai a few years ago and said that his students had become so adept at the keypads on their phones that they’d begun to be able to text in their pockets or behind their backs, without looking! This machine right here would have a step up on them, as the user of this would also be able to READ behind their back. Super fab!

This device works with both braille characters and other easily recognizable symbols on a unique grid of tactile dots. Each dot works in tangent with the rest to present a rather excellent interactive keypad. The pad also works with high-contrast coloring to aid in learning if the user is gradually losing sight.

Replaceable silicone covers.

Fashionable.

Currently being studied and developed for production.

Cooler Than A Mushroom

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:10 AM PST

We normally think of central air conditioners as large cube shaped metal crates that do nothing for a building’s figure but the Mushroom AHU (air handling unit) proves design can make a world a difference. Apparently the shape of a mushroom is well suited to circulate air. One day, large buildings may have clusters of mushrooms in alleys and rooftops. I love the idea if it works but I’m more concerned about art imitating life. Are my Super Mario dreams coming true?

Tea Making is So Steampunk

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:05 AM PST

Project Ignotus is a metal container used to boil water for tea traditionally called a samovar. The ingeniously retro modern design gives it the flare vintage samovars are known for but with an added steampunk twist. Tho updated, the mechanical workings are still old school. Charcoal or even coal provides the fuel to boil water  to be dispensed out of a spout engineered to give you that perfect stream into a cup. One added bonus is the double walled construction to keep water and tea hotter, longer.

iSkin Solo Review

Posted: 07 Dec 2009 12:01 AM PST

iPhone cases are a dime a dozen but a handful stand out combining functionality with beautiful design. iSkin is synonymous with protective soft goods so it didn’t surprise me how good the Solo was for the iPhone. It’s crazy affordable and there is a color/design option for every taste. The hardest part is deciding which one to get. Hit the jump for my review.

Gone are the days of rubber and cheap silicone injected molds. The new materials are crazy thin. The Solo is 0.1mm thick. If ever you wanted a way to protect your iPhone 3G/S without bulking it up – this is it. A bonus feature is the Microban. This antimicrobial protection prevents staining and those off putting odors. Remember how the first iPhone cases would turn yellow? Gross.

The Solo is actually just one of a trio of cases for the iPhone 3G/S. The Solo is devoid of any patterns. They’re just translucent colored cases, but if you want to be a little different, there’s the Solo FX with it’s subtle pattern and mirrored screen protector. The real “sex” is the Solo FX SE. It’s deceptively minimalist until you feel the subtle textures and embossed patterns.

The entire Solo family comes with screen protectors that require no spray glue. You can peel them off and reuse them. The FX and FX SE come with mirrored options which turns your screen into a mirror when the screen is off. They don’t hinder performance and you mostly likely won’t even notice it.

iSkin has significantly improved their cutting and molding techniques. All the ports and switches line up. It’s thin enough to leave the dock port totally accessible and the lip is gently curved to hug the iPhone’s bezel. Unlike other slim cases, you don’t get a massive pile of lint and debris stuck between the edges.

What we loved:

  • Many designs to choose from.
  • Easy to install, screen protector is excellent.
  • Doesn’t stretch out over time.
  • Tactile to the touch making it slip resistant.
  • Microban protection.
  • Access to all ports and switches.
  • Affordable ranging from $24 – $34.

What could be improved:

  • Nothing, it’s an excellent protect.
