I’m Feeling “Alright”

Posted: 13 Nov 2008 09:54 AM CST

Born of Japanese and Danish influences, Joseph Riehl’s Alright rocking chair looks like a comfortable addition to any room, fitting right in with that Ikea sofa you just can’t get rid of. While the low rise design may suit gamers more than most, the chair could rock anyone to sleep with the rubber mount that stretches and compresses in any direction. It’s a good thing the bent arcs give the joints extra strength, because I could see myself spending a lot of time in something like this.

Leaky Roof Brightens Your Day

Posted: 13 Nov 2008 09:11 AM CST

The art of lighting design is finding ways to articulate glaring light out over surfaces without inefficiently wasting too much of the lamp’s power. Daniel Becker accomplishes that in his “Melting Light” by hanging an LED packed ‘raindrop’ below a rippling plastic reflector. The brilliance of Daniel’s light is in the rippling shape; by spreading the otherwise harsh reflection out over three concentric circles, the glare and shadows are softened and become pleasing to the eye.

Close the Blinds and Turn Your Love Light On

Posted: 13 Nov 2008 04:16 AM CST

You might not be a romantic at heart or even that great at planning a memorable dinner party. Regardless, it is well known that the ambience of your surroundings can make or break that memorable moment-Some nice mellow tunes, great friends and most importantly lighting. Unfortunately lighting requires electricity which means a high electricity bill. The result is a need for a change in our thinking and adopting a more economical way of using light for our environment. Imagine if you will, closing the blinds and immediately having the perfect lighting effect that you are trying to achieve.

The Solar vertical lamp can give us that and so much more. With the blinds closed during the day blocking the rays of the hot sun, little solar pads are being charged on the back of the blinds and once the sun goes down, your mood lighting shines. The Solar Vertical Lamp is created by Korean designers Yoon-Hui Kim and Eun-Kyung Kim and available in a floor/table lamp or a stylish chandelier. Add one to each window in your home and at night, you have a beautifully lit home and a much lower electrical bill. Frugality and environmental friendliness at its best.

MacGyver Tries iPod Speakers

Posted: 13 Nov 2008 02:09 AM CST

With all the hot-to-trot conceptual design work out there, it takes quite a person to just sit back and kick out the jams on a speaker set like this. Presenting the iPod Ghetto Accessory. iPod with classic earbuds, two toothpicks, no girls, and four cups. What else could a person ask for?

Designer Dmitry Zagga pokes fun at the concept of product design
conceptualization:

This is a fun project. Four single-serving paper cups, two tooth picks (for holding cups together) + iPod with classic earbuds. The increase in volume, of coarse, is radiculous, but hey, you get stylish iPod accessory out of nothing!

Can we trust a person who totally just MacGyvers up a speaker system out of cups and toothpics? Yes. Yes we can.

Miami Dade College is a Super Building

Posted: 13 Nov 2008 02:05 AM CST

Located at Biscayne Boulevard and NE 5th Street in downtown Miami, the Campus Center for Miami Dade college looks like something out of OMA’s handbag.  It is urban density turned into a superbuilding, combining apartments, offices, educational facilities, and a lot of space for art exhibition.  But it is all Miami: the bravado somehow feels just what downtown Miami needs, and the design firm responsible, Oppenheim Architects , is located in Miami as well.  Oppenheim’s website says the project’s estimated completion is 2012, although we think this is an incredibly optimistic considering the project that has a lot of speculative residential and commercial development.

Still, those dbox renderings really look sweet.  We hope it happens.
