Posted: 27 Apr 2009 12:44 AM PDT We jabber quite a bit about conservation and how we need to respect the environment, but the number of people who actually go out of the way to practice what they preach is very limited. If you are the preachy sort who kinda wants to crossover to the action group, then you need to check this Every Drop Counts Water Meter. This is a device that will meter your water usage plus detect running, dripping & leaky pipes, without drying up your pockets! The meter clamps onto the pipe and does not interfere with the water-flow system. Easy and cost effective installation coupled with inexpensive (low cost per unit) components, makes the meter a viable device. The system automatically relays all the relevant data to the detachable display. Info displayed includes how much water you use and where are you using it, and the tap water temperature. This is what the designer has to say about Every Drop Counts: "Imagine all European cities cutting their water consumption down by 20 percent within a few years. The Every Drop Counts meter is aiming for just that. Based on cost allocation technology that has proven to save between 20 and 30 percent of heating consumption where applied, combined with a known method for detecting water leakages this new concept for water metering has a host of advantages over traditional water meters." Sunshine On A Rainy Day Means Loads Of Energy Posted: 27 Apr 2009 12:08 AM PDT 2020 is really not that far away, but are we prepared to experiment with what Philips has conjured up for our housing options of the future? They are proposing that we harness the energies of the elements to sustain our living quarters by entrapping the renewable resources on-site, using some membrane-type of contraption! Shifting the focus from eco-friendly building materials, Off the Grid Sustainable Habitat 2020 will do-away with "inert outer surfaces" that merely protect out exteriors by making them intelligent. Apparently the exteriors will feature functional and responsive ’skins’ that react to the ever changing environment. The exteriors are thus built that they can capture the rainwater (recycled for domestic use and filtered for drinking), trap the sunlight (for electricity and solar power), harness the winds (for air cooling) and channelize daylight (for illumination). The proposal sounds interesting, but the only area its gets too far fetched, is when Philips suggests, that the ‘intelligent membrane’ of the exterior could mean that the building would no longer need to be connected to traditional energy and water supply systems. I don't see this happening anytime soon, at least not in 2020. Designer: Philips Design Sustainable Air Sustainable Water Sustainable Light Sustainable Waste No Tags |
Fashion Glossy, Frills and Dinner Jackets Posted: 27 Apr 2009 12:00 AM PDT Imagine using the three in context of cupboard, seating and lighting. Black Flower This is a lamp whose flexible construction lets you place it on the floor or hang it from the ceiling. The leaves are made from polyester felt and copper thread and the Lampshade is plastic. RE:cover Chair Frock Coats, Dinner Jackets, Victorian Era? Modus:cover Cupboard Immortalizing the fashion glossy the day you build this cupboard. Fred, hat's off to you for this idea, and I'm sure Tyra will love you for this and maybe place an order for America's Next Top Model House as well. Basic premise is this: take the covers of the fashion magazines and paste it on the doors of the cupboard, which is then stained in black and varnished. A secret shelf inside the cupboard hides the original magazine. This particular piece features a PLAZA magazine on an Oak cupboard. The innards are left in a natural finish. Those going to the Milan Fair, be sure to check all of these out. And report straight back to Me! Designer: Fredrik Färg No Tags |
