Posted: 05 May 2009 12:35 AM PDT Try changing a flat tire in the dead of the night, on a road that has no streetlights. Too farfetched? No stuff like this happens; it happens to people like you and me….and then to top it all off you either forget to pack in a flashlight or the battery on it dies out! Designer AndrĂ© Monteiro is glad to help in such sticky, rather dark situations with his Ylight. What makes the Ylight different from the rest of the gang? This flashlight takes inspiration from a lantern and boast of a "Y" form factor. It hosts three lights that work independently, giving you the option of controlling their intensity, focus and direction. Each lamp features a rotational axis of about 45 degrees along the horizontal plane, which allows you to direct the light to different places. All three torches are autonomous and rely on kinetic energy to power them. To harness the power, you need to press on the indicator at the center of the torch with a finger and give it a couple of spins with your free hand. Handy-dandy triple flash-light! Now only remember to carry this one with you! Designer: AndrĂ© Monteiro No Tags |
Posted: 05 May 2009 12:02 AM PDT Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Anthony Bourdain; all my favorite men will agree with me when I say that it's the spices that you add to the cooking that make or break the dish. Like most Asians, my kitchen too is stocked up with a variety of spices and I really miss my collection when I'm on vacation, cooking in my holiday-home kitchenette. Anyways, my point is that packing the spices is always a bother, which is why I leave most of them at home, but looks like with the MUJI taste-leaf book I won't have to compromise on flavors anymore. This wonderful book actually contains sheets that are embedded with spices. Traditionally we chop and store the flavorings in jars, but this is kinda like the soap-strip! Tear it and use it. Need some pepper? Just tear out the perforated page and add it to the dish! Edible quality paper embedded with the spice dissolve into the food, adding the much needed flavoring. The moisture and heat ensure that the spices mix in well. MUJI is a perfect solution for cooking enthusiasts who travel or folks low on kitchen storage space. Designer: Nick Bampton No Tags |
Posted: 05 May 2009 12:01 AM PDT You aren’t dreaming! And this isn’t Waterworld! You know what I’m talking about, Kevin Costner. This is a device for emergency areas / unclean-water areas for yes, you guessed it, turning urine into drinkable water. Human or animal. First, pee on the Activated Carbon in the device to make the pee lose it’s color and it’s flavor. Second, squeeze the container, third, drink! If you do so willingly choose to comment on this post, please make a suggestion for a better title for the project. H2O is a bit too vague for this internet keyword-searching modern world. And it’s about pee! Designer: Leonardo Manavella No Tags |
Zipper That Got Me All Entangled Posted: 05 May 2009 12:00 AM PDT Thanks to all for appreciating the Yi Earphone, but I must say that some of the responses that I have been getting are pretty overwhelming. All loyal YDers know that we editors merely showcase talents of designers and are in no way involved in the designing process. So it took me by surprise when a mail came in threatening me for showcasing "this copied design"! Well my-dear-upset-designer, I didn't design it and tell me what are you gonna do about this Universal Zip Lock Earphone? Agreed this doesn't use a zipper as an excuse, it uses Zip Loc for inspiration instead. It also lacks the fancy volume control button seen in the Yi. But it's a functional piece that looks to addressing the same tangled wires issue with another similar perspective. So what's next? Will get Zip Loc get upset with me now? Is it fair to hold us writers responsible if we showcase someone else's similar talent before you send in your works? Fight your own designer-ego battles dude! YD does not and will not indulge in such ego-centric battles! Designer: Seon-Keun Park No Tags |
