Free Giveaway: Bike To Work Pants

Posted: 11 May 2009 12:00 AM PDT

I don’t need to iterate the benefits of cycling, you know the facts. However it’s a shame when we hear about preventable accidents because of visibility issues. There are many ways to ensure you don’t become another statistic, but the most interesting and sure fire way I’ve found is with this kitsch pair of Bike To Work Pants. Fashion Divas need not despair as the pants come in a variety of colors and materials. Hit Jump to find out how you can win 2 of them!

Prance around your office in a totally awesome pair and when it’s time to bike off homeward, simply roll up the hems and lined cuffs and pull out the rear pockets. The Illuminite Teflon reflectors and 3M Scotchlite lining make these pants your prefect biking companion.

We at YD love the pair of pants so much that we convinced the San Fransisco based Cordarounds to sponsor 2 pairs for a FREE Giveaway!

All you need to do is tell us where else besides the cuff, hems and back pockets do you think the teflon reflectors would look good.

Leave your comments below.

2 lucky winners get to take home either a pair of Bike To work Pants or a pair of classic Cordarounds.

Contest Ends: May 13, 12:00 am PST

Cordarounds are an online exclusive, so you won’t find them in stores.

Creative Tea Drinking

Posted: 11 May 2009 04:53 AM PDT

Tea drinking and brewing is an art form often patronized on YD. Adding to our growing list is this delightful Turtle Tea Kettle. The kettle doesn't discriminate against loose-leaf, teabags and compressed-tea, tea drinkers' coz its comfy enough brewing any of these sorts. The added advantage of a separate glass container for the loose tealeaves makes sure you don't get any debris while sipping your drink. If the creative-cook gets the better of you; heck you can even use the kettle to brew up some exotic hot beverage and treat yourself!

This is how the kettle works:

Add the loose tealeaves to the glass container and pop the cap on it and load it into the water filled kettle. Place your turtle kettle on the stove, set the timer on the cap, and wait for the ring. The glass container has very small machined holes so that the tea can be infused properly without moving about in the water. So after when you pour your tea to drink it, you won't be sucking in the bits of tea leaves.

To boil water simply slap on the cap without plugging in the glass container and wait for the whistle to sound.

Made from ceramic, the kettle features a side window that lets you keep a check on the water levels of the container. The handle and timer cap is made out of a heat resistant phenolic plastic, making them easy to handle when hot.

A cute, new way to brew the cuppa!

Future of Personal Mobile Communication Lies In Your Imagination

Posted: 11 May 2009 04:00 AM PDT

UPDATE: 5 Weeks Left!

Self-help is the best help, the sooner you imbibe this rule in your life, the faster you will find success. I'm not trying to be preachy here, but this is a fact that most biggies in the industry live by.

If you want to own the best possible mobile phone in this world, my dear friend you're gonna have to design it yourself, because you know what's best for you. We live for the future and this is the theme for LG's Design the Future Competition as well. Partnering with crowdSPRING and Autodesk®, LG is accepting applications from eligible candidates who have the power of transforming their creative thoughts and imaginations effectively to design. It's a chance to do something for yourself that others can benefit from as well.

To help in this adventure, participating designers will get a free 15-day trial pack of the Autodesk SketchBook Pro software to showcase their talent. Of course, the rewards are plenty! The First Place takes home $20,000 Cash Award; the Second Place: $10,000 Cash Award; Third Place: $5,000 Cash Award; 40 Honorable Mentions: $1,000 Cash Award + 1 LG U.S. Phone (A.R.V. of $300).

Regulations require participants to be a U.S. resident, 18-years and above, and the entries need to be submitted before June 7, 2009 @ 11:59 p.m. (midnight) PST. Owning an LG phone or purchasing a new one won't win you any favors, so designers don't bother, just let your creative juices flow….

Official rules can be found at www.crowdspring.com/LG.
Winners will be announced on July 7, 2009 at www.crowdspring.com/LG/winners.

No Switch’n This Lamp!

Posted: 11 May 2009 02:56 AM PDT

Besides their whacky sense of poetry, designer duo Qian and Yiying's perceptions in ID tickle me no end! For example this JOININ' Lamp; now it does what lamps are supposed to do…Light Up; but the duo jazz up the design by doing away with the ever-essential switch. They have included eight pairs of electrical contacts instead. So toss in some coins (or fancy metal pins) and see which of those 8 LEDs light up! Quirky ID fun!

JOININ' Lamp

no switch
but eight pairs of electrical contacts
Each pair controls each LED part of eight.
So let's throw some coins to it,
to see how many LED parts will be on.

Honda Hovercar

Posted: 11 May 2009 12:01 AM PDT

This was supposed to be the future! That’s what I heard. I was always told that in the future, we’d have flying cars. I’d say what happened to that, but I know what happened to that: John Mahieddine happened to that. The “Honda Fuzo” is a Vertical Take-Off and Landing concept. The Fuzo is a futuristic fantasy with four high-powered turbines for high-speed horizontal flight and Iron-Man-like handling. Cruzin in at 350 mph, two joystick control for speed, trust, and steering. Vertical spaceways for ultra-infinite possibilities.

The joysticks. Here’s how they work. There’s two joysticks, one on either side of the driver’s seat on the armrests. The left joystick “allows the car to spin on its axis,” and the right one “manages tilt and direction.”

At the floor are the normal pedals controlling power and brakes.

For safety, two things in particular:
1. Fly-by-Wire system that relies on GPS to keep cars from hitting one another.
2. Airbags that open inside AND outside of the vehicle to protect the driver, the car, and anyone in the path of the car should it get in an air-collision. (Speed Racer anyone?)

Of course, if you’re into the whole landlubber thing, you can drive on the ground with the retractable wheels (the turbines convert into these.) The vehicle is constructed of materials such as carbon fibre, Kevlar, and carbon nano-tubes. The bubble canopy allows for two passengers plus the driver, “in a very hightech comfort.”

Water by Numbers

Posted: 11 May 2009 12:00 AM PDT

So you need a glass of water to drink. Yes? Would you like to know how much H2O you’re WASTING when you take that cold refreshment from the vein of the earth itself? Well now you can! You can know basically exactly how much water goes through your pipe before your bill-person does! The “Bware-Water” is cute, has a little number display, and is so easy to instal, a child could do it.

This little thang is made of recycled ABS. Check out the setup below, and admire the simplicity of it all. Log your results, and always call a plummer before turning any knobs or cranks you’re not sure about.

P.S. for those that wrote letters and asked: drinking water is not a waste. In fact, it’s a genuine legitimate usage approved by several renowned institutions and doctors.
