Posted: 01 Aug 2008 03:31 PM CDT

Thanks to readers like you Yanko Design is growing fast. If you’ve ever wanted to write for us now is the time because YD is looking to expand its staff. Connected to the student base? That’s even better. Part of working on an innovative ID editorial team means research and today’s innovations usually come from students.

Got an opinion on the ID industry? Speak your mind. That’s the kind of stuff we want to read. You’re probably used to YD only writing about concepts but as we grow, we want to expand. That includes concepts, product reviews, industry news coverage, and opinionated editorial pieces.

These are paid positions so apply only if serious. If you live, breathe, and dream design as we do, please apply, we need:

• Three sample posts
• An introduction and why you're interested in design and writing about design
• Your resume
• Your contact info and scheduling, including a ballpark number of posts per week
• Your rate per post

Once your application is complete, please email us.

Proton, The iPod of AC’s

Posted: 08 Aug 2008 02:54 AM CDT

What is so "cool" about this AC unit designed by Michael Laut is that not only is it quiet, but it is stylish and environmentally friendly. The wall-mounted Proton induces air through ionization which helps to eliminate the normally loud buzz of the usual outside AC unit. The Proton also is beneficial for the environment in which it is placed by using the condensation produced by the compressor to water any plants or vegetation that sits below it. Made from a polylactic acid, a corn based eco-friendly plastic, the Proton is eye candy for any viewer and brings style to any type of home siding.

Check Me Out

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 05:30 PM CDT

The Motorola Sparrow was conceived to provide retail stores with a mobile point of sale device to solve increased service demands from consumers while decentralizing the check out point, i.e. pay for it and get out as fast as you can. It combines a scanner, point of sale (POS) system, RFID, communication and credit card reading capabilities into one mobile device.

There are a few devices that offer MPOS (mobile point of sale) in the marketplace but none are consumer facing nor appropriate for front-end retail environments. Existing products are often rugged and obtrusive. If you’ve ever been to an Apple store, you know what I’m talking about. They often take away from the environment and make the entire retail experience unpleasant.

Both the front and back of the Sparrow are equipped with touch sensitive areas, supposedly making it easier to navigate and use. The entire unit can hang from a lanyard.

This isn’t a new idea but definitely a huge improvement. Many high-tech electronic stores now equip their employees with mobile point of sale devices but designer Rinat Aruh definitely has an eye for form and function. I’d love to see it integrated into retail environments.

A Fountain Pen For The Modern

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 05:12 PM CDT

Fountain pens may lend an air of sophistication but damn can they get anymore dated? I mean all I need is a monocle, a bowler hat, a tweed suit and I’m all set. This fountain pen design but Vivien Muller updates the ubiquitous writing tool to where I wouldn’t mind using one. Okay ergonomics may have taken a backseat here but hell, it’ll look sexy just sitting on my desk.

Electric Slide Mobile Get Bent!

Posted: 07 Aug 2008 01:14 PM CDT

Why bother with one screen when you can have two for probably double the price? Designer Andy Kurovets presents his “Bend Mobile” concept. He thinks turning on a device and having it grow to nearly double its size will really be attractive to some people. He may be right but where is the proof? Oh right, he is also including a high capacity digital camera that also pops out to larger than expected proportions. All that and it’s curved, for easy sliding in and out of your pants. Niiice.
