Cutting Board Woes

Posted: 04 May 2009 03:56 AM PDT

A surefire way of sanitizing your kitchen cutting board is to add chlorine to the rinsing water every once in a while; sadly who's got the time for it! We basically soap it thoroughly and rinse it off hoping that the bacteria are washed away and are not having a picnic out there! About 76 million cases of food-borne illness, most of which are caused by bacteria inhabiting uncooked food or contaminated cooking surfaces, are reported every year. Hopefully the UV enabled Alkeo will not let us become another statistic.

Although many consider plastic boards to be safer bet, the truth is that maintaining a hygienic cutting board is difficult. Alkeo is a kitchen-top device that uses a medical-grade germicidal UV lamp to destroy bacteria and viruses on the sturdy polycarbonate cutting board that accompanies it. Basically, after you're done with your chopping, you simply push the board through the slot on top of Alkeo and let the UV do its destructive action. Although this device may give you the satisfaction of a sterilized cutting board, it may be wise to follow the adage "When in doubt, throw it out"; when considering discarding an old board.

It’s Raining Pictures From My Shower

Posted: 04 May 2009 12:56 AM PDT

When you see a sleek little projector like this Photo Shower, you expect it to be packed with tech-specs and groundbreaking features; but NO! No, no, no! It DOES NOT boast of any such things, in fact it goes out of the way to ensure that you get the point: It's a simple uncomplicated projector. It's USP; it pours images down the screen like the cascade from a shower head; that's it! Drops of photos trickle down the screen. Functions on the device are pretty basic but it sure scores high on the glam quotient.

Sometimes simple devices re-packaged in a glamorous avatar could be the things that we look for in life. For example I'm sure many of you may have been content with browsing through your photos from albums. The joy of developing a film roll and seeing the end results has its own old-world charm. However innovation was necessary, hence we see digital cameras and digital picture frames peppering our lives. I wonder how many of us find that same pleasure when we browse through buttons of a frame as we did when we leafed through the book albums.

Rustic, nostalgic, old, whatever!
If I have to give-in to the current trends, then I may as well adopt easy-to-operate projectors that spill out images from a shower head! As long as they go with my décor; I'm good!

Future of Personal Mobile Communication Lies In Your Imagination

Posted: 04 May 2009 12:50 AM PDT

UPDATE: 6 Weeks Left!

Self-help is the best help, the sooner you imbibe this rule in your life, the faster you will find success. I'm not trying to be preachy here, but this is a fact that most biggies in the industry live by.

If you want to own the best possible mobile phone in this world, my dear friend you're gonna have to design it yourself, because you know what's best for you. We live for the future and this is the theme for LG's Design the Future Competition as well. Partnering with crowdSPRING and Autodesk®, LG is accepting applications from eligible candidates who have the power of transforming their creative thoughts and imaginations effectively to design. It's a chance to do something for yourself that others can benefit from as well.

To help in this adventure, participating designers will get a free 15-day trial pack of the Autodesk SketchBook Pro software to showcase their talent. Of course, the rewards are plenty! The First Place takes home $20,000 Cash Award; the Second Place: $10,000 Cash Award; Third Place: $5,000 Cash Award; 40 Honorable Mentions: $1,000 Cash Award + 1 LG U.S. Phone (A.R.V. of $300).

Regulations require participants to be a U.S. resident, 18-years and above, and the entries need to be submitted before June 7, 2009 @ 11:59 p.m. (midnight) PST. Owning an LG phone or purchasing a new one won't win you any favors, so designers don't bother, just let your creative juices flow….

Official rules can be found at www.crowdspring.com/LG.
Winners will be announced on July 7, 2009 at www.crowdspring.com/LG/winners.

Summer Time Calls For Picnics And Coolers

Posted: 04 May 2009 12:06 AM PDT

Pretty soon we will have summer shining upon us and it will be time to pack up the sandwiches and cakes, get out the wicker hamper and bring down the trusty old ice-cooler from the attic. Gear up for Picnic Time folks!
I propose a slight change in this routine however; let's ditch the old fuddy-duddy cooler for something as chic and classy (and better functional) as the LEVEL cooler.

Unlike the normal coolers where you really struggle to carry them up and down the stairs, LEVEL is more comfortable to carry thanks to its unique handles. The box is bottom heavy and the handle bars are placed slightly above the center point ensuring that it does not spin around randomly. The central wheel features a setting hub that allows you to lock the handle bar in a horizontal position. It's much easier for two people to carry the box with the handles in this locked position. To lock it, turn the center hub and to release it simply turn it back horizontally.

There are two more interesting features to this ice-cooler. One is the draining system and the other is the dividers. For draining the melted ice water from the bucket, you need to pull on the bottom draining lid. From here the residual water drains out in a jiffy thanks to the concave base in the design.

Removable dividers have been added to the design for two purposes, one: so that you can stow foods and beverages separately according to your convenience and two: the dividers help in balancing the cooler by distributing the weight evenly.

Overall a cool design; now let's just wait for summer….and the picnics!

Recycling Typography

Posted: 04 May 2009 12:01 AM PDT

It is set upon me to congratulate the simplest and most why-didn’t-I-do-that designs, I think. Here’s one of them. It’s brilliant. These folks decided it was lamp time, and having seen the way of the modern design-driven world, decided that giant characters would be in order. And wow! If their idea of refurbishing isn’t the most pleasant bit of sustainable lampatude I’ve ever set eyes upon.

Aleksi Hautamäki and company are currently in the “production” phase. They’ve got their sources for old light-up signs, they’ve got the technology, and they will rebuild them!

“Sustainability of this product is not superimposed, but in the very essence of it. The second life cycle creates new value for everybody involved, the sign maker, the producer, the retailer and the customer.” - Aleksi Hautamäki

The reinstalled LEDs have a life span of 30,000 hours, which means that if the light is on for 8 hours a day, they last the minimum of 10 years. The letters will have been tested to meet the European electricity standards.

I will take the Helvetica Neue Bold Capital “A” as well as the Futura Standard Extra Bold Condensed Oblique “D” for my collection. Yes that would be lovely.
