My Home’s Umbrella is Better Than Yours Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:39 AM PST Designer and Architect Andreas Angelidakis released a couple renders on his New Menir house, which I call an island rock. Nevermind the interior or geologic design, check out the rooftop! This “floral umbrella” opens up to capture the suns free energy but when it becomes windy or when night falls, turns into a wind turbine. How adorable! Car Enthusiats Now Frugal with Water Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:23 AM PST Water conservation is still one of the easiest ways to save energy (yes energy!) and preserve our planet. Fresh water only accounts for 3% of all water on Earth but 1% of it is frozen so in that sense, it’s quite rare. The +Shifter faucet uses the perception of a car’s gearbox to change how much water we use. Instead of changing gear ratios, each position correlates to how much water flows out. The design is sleek and minimal, somewhat reminiscent of a luxury sports car. Everything from the brushed black metal to the copper faceplate screams “I’m expensive!” However Designer Shen Di doesn’t mention how it controls temperature. Inquiring minds would like to know. Blow Up Balloons To Clear Up Stank Odors Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:22 AM PST Fresh Blow is a product designed to replace boring mundane air fresheners with something fun and energetic! You blow up a balloon thru an aromatic capsule and release it. As the balloon whizzes around frantically, fresh aromatics fill your room. There are other ways to use Fresh Blow too (seriously that name has me thinking of other things). When you need an instant pick me up, twist open the capsule and take a direct hit, getting a full whiff to awaken your senses. There’s even a time release option by letting the balloon slowly deflate with the capsule still attached ensuring freshness throughout the day along with that slight whistle that sounds like farts. Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:15 AM PST This is not some new solar powered gadget, this is a product that can revolutionize the way we produce and store energy. The surface of the table is covered in highly efficient photovoltaic cells that collect solar energy all year and then “feeds” the home with precious “clean” electrical energy. No need for complicated installations - can be fitted in any garden or outdoor space and it is a piece of classic elegance and beauty that will last forever. Violent Sun is particularly beneficial to the contract and leisure market, where the use of outdoor furniture is extensive and energy bills very costly. The table is the first object in this range, which is also to include a bench, light and flag pole. The overall design language is inspired by Classic Architecture and specifically Doric Order Greek columns. In order to avoid the stereotypical image of solar powered objects as high tech, ugly and gadgety, the designer has focused on materials and formal languages that are engaging, classic and timeless. The base is made out of a solid, carved, black Terrazo piece. The top is covered in elegant Polycrystaline PV cells that create a contemporary pattern. This is a beautifully crafted monolith of a table that uses design as a way to entice the consumer to a more ethical way of living. Designer: Afroditi Krassa Afroditi Krassa |
Posted: 06 Jan 2009 12:57 AM PST This is one living concept that’s all about conservation. The Napkins Calendar inspires you to only use one cleaning device per 24 hour period. Right? Maybe not. Napkins Calendar reminds me of a similar project made by my friend and associate Dylan Lathrop. Mr. Lathrop’s project was a collection of stickers that had their “stuck on” date printed on them. The result of the project: reflection. Reflecting on the notion that we’ve only very recently started championing “green” design in ernest: would a box of calendar napkins make you realize how much you might waste each day? How Many Supercars Can a Woodchuck Chuck Posted: 05 Jan 2009 09:55 PM PST And now for something completely different? I’d say this was a strange play on recent “keep your non-green riches a secret” trends, but it’s been in the works for a while. North Carolina State University’s craftspeople have got one amazing looking machine on their hands, and I dare say they’ve chosen the best time, (economically and green-wise,) to come this close to completion. Check out the stats courtesy of Autoblog.
