1st prize: Spore Shaker and Onion Sauce Jar by Heather Bayless from the United States The concept for this piece comes from a childhood memory of making mushroom spore prints, creating a graphic pattern that repeats the pattern of the mushroom gills after the spores fall from the mushroom. This was the perfect inspiration for spice shakers. The spice powder is contained in the vessel form and can be shaken out through slots in the gill structure, creating a linear pattern. The gill form is removed for filling the container and is held closed with a bayonette fitting. The vessel form was created through by raising by hammer as well as fabrication. The gill structure was created through fabrication and the stem was formed through a combination of fabrication and hammering. The title “Twins” comes from the fact that mushrooms in groupings are all related to each other, but have their own differences and levels of development, as twins do.

Posted: 22 Jan 2009 05:05 AM PST If you still have incandescent bulbs, then I will now beat you with a silly stick. Fortunately for you here’s one more way to get use out of those archaic bulbs. The Bulb Hugger is a thermally charged light that wraps around any incandescent. Whenever your incandescent turns off or if the power goes out, the secondary light automatically turns on for up to 5 hours. If you’ve got these bulbs outdoors, an upper ring containing insect repellent vaporizes from heat, keeping bugs away. Designer: Arpan Maiti Arpan Maiti |
Posted: 22 Jan 2009 04:58 AM PST Träd is not only a storage system, Träd is a shelter - a personal space where children carry out their fantasies and games. A place that allows them to feel safe, to learn and to imagine. Think of it as their enchanted forest where they can dream of heroes and princesses and live a thousand and one adventures. Damn I want one already! Träd, by designers Josué Gamonal and Vicente Porres (Madrid), won the Third Maria Martinez Otero Industrially-Produced Designer Furniture Award. The theme of this third edition was "The Child’s Universe" The judges agreed unanimously and pointed out that the project represent an innovative concept that broadens the typology of kid’s furniture, thanks to its references to nature and its playhouse and shelter-like quality. The judges also highlighted the simplicity and the presentation of the proposal, as well as its poetry not to mention how frackin’ sweet those illustrations are! Writer Chris Burns Destroyed by Spy Robot Posted: 22 Jan 2009 01:00 AM PST Meet Spykee, construct-it-yourself spy robot. It runs on tracks, it’s got spy gear, and it’s WIFI. It is the dream of all true nerds to have at least one robot companion. Ideally, they’d be happiest with a city college robot, but for those who wish to own their own, here’s the tiny one. Spykee. Enquiring minds want to know: what does “spy gear” consist of? Well, we’re in luck, because we have a detailed list of what Spykee is capable of right here- oh. uh oh. There he is. Spykee no! I wasn’t going to share the list of your capabilities! I know that would be absurd, and could endanger the entire spy world! I swear I didn’t say anything! No Spykee, don’t do it! Sneaky Lamp Peeps Around Corners Posted: 22 Jan 2009 12:30 AM PST It is the Snake Lamp. Made with a “unique” polypropylene sheet twisting and turning it’s way into your heart. You heard? It’s got a bunch of turns you ain’t never seen, and all without glue or welding. Just a mad, mad, magnet party. For your triangle house. And respect the CLEVER logo mark. Get a Vague Idea of How Fat You Are Posted: 22 Jan 2009 12:00 AM PST “Vage”, a concept scale from German designer Patrick Decker, seeks to assuage our overly critical perceptions of weight. Rather than display actual mass in pounds or kilograms, it indicates either green or red relative to a user’s ideal weight. Considering a weight scale exists to give accurate measurement of a person’s mass, you’d think something as vague as this would be useless. Maybe the next iteration could dispense a cookie and replace the color red with “you’re just big boned.” Designer: Patrick Decker No Tags |
Greener Shopping, Flip & Tumble Loopt Review Posted: 21 Jan 2009 11:06 AM PST Looking to abandon disposable plastic bags at the grocery store? Have a looksie at the Flip & Tumble Loopt before you decide. Hit the jump to read my lightening review, GO! What we liked:
What could be improved:
I’ve been using them for over a month on weekly grocery trips. Don’t be fooled by how thin they are. They hold a lot. To give you an idea, one bag was enough to hold a head of lettuce, 32 oz can of broth, 3 apples, 2 oranges, a bag of grapes, 2 bunches of kale, and a bunch of carrots. They’re no more convenient than canvas bags and I never spend the time to carefully roll them up into the built-in bands. If you haven’t already made the switch to reusable bags, I’d recommend these since they’re so much easier to wash and especially dry than bags made hemp and cotton. Experience Summer Glow During Winter Posted: 21 Jan 2009 09:36 AM PST Hollywood movies showcase the perfect winter day effectively, however the truth is quite contrary. Look at the snow on the driveway! How gloomy and dark the skies are! After you're done with the shoveling and nursing your frostbitten fingers, it takes a while to really appreciate the snowman or the snowflakes. If you were to have the Luminaarparaad installation on your lane, wouldn't it make the drab, cold winters more cheerful? Lighting up the street, these plastic flowers and bushes are coated and molded with special glow paint. These special paints absorb the solar energy during the day and thus glow at night. With the current recession gloom over our heads, I guess we all could do with some color that will help us tide this winter! Emergency Hazard Lights Better Than Flares? Posted: 21 Jan 2009 07:53 AM PST Emergency hazard lights aren’t anything new so unless you’re going to rewrite the book and create a paradigm shift, only thing you have to differentiate yourself is design. The Lumitic light is cute, yes I said cute! The egro handle lights up red to flag would be saviors down or a simple release turns the unit into a tripod to divert ongoing traffic. Better than emergency flares but not as fun. Something about fire. Quick point of diversion here. An industrial designer once told me if someone critiques your design as either cute or interesting, go back to the drawing board. Designer: Sung-Hun Shin Sung Hun Shin, SungHun Shin |
Better Than Bubble Wrap Says Mother Nature Posted: 21 Jan 2009 07:52 AM PST Plastic bubbles wraps are one of the chief sources of environmental degradation since our world revolves around the packaging and transport of goods. The Paper Wrap offers the same level of protection but at a very neutral cost to the planet. A precut symmetric pattern similar to a steel grate buffers precious goods but I see two faults. One, the flexibility of bubble wrap makes it more usable in a wide array of applications. Two, I can’t pop paper wrap and everyone knows humans have an OCD fascination with popping bubbles.
