No More Racks For My Mag, Only Stands Posted: 04 Jun 2009 03:50 AM PDT I simply adore the eccentric style of Fredrik Färg. This time around he's ready to woo the crowds with is magazine stand named Skyscrape. It's like he wants to recreate an "architectural forest" around the room. For a person who likes to keep books neatly stacked, it would be a fetish nightmare, but for the whimsical…a visual treat! Designer: Fredrik Färg Fredrik Farg, Furniture, Magazine, Skyscrape, Stand |
This Anti-Theft For Bike Relies On Good Samaritans Posted: 04 Jun 2009 12:46 AM PDT Meerkat is a bright, colorful ABS beacon kinda thang that has the height, sex and age of the owner of a bicycle molded onto it. In transit, it fits as a mudguard to the cycle; and when parked, it can be removed (lifted up-over the seat) to fit as an anti-theft with the bike lock. Till this bit the concept is fine; the flipside kicks in on two counts: it relies heavily on a Good Samaritan to notice the theft and report it and what do you do with the mudguard when someone else uses the bike or you grow up! If the Samaritan does take the trouble of capturing a pic of the thief (doubtful), then it can be used by the police and as Simpon puts it, "the data will then be filtered and directly uploaded and GPS stamped to a specialized, police monitored Google map which can be used as an evidence gathering system." Doubtful! Doubtful! Doubtful! Designer: Simon Enever Cycles, lock, Meerkat, Mudguard, Removable, Simon Enever |
Posted: 04 Jun 2009 12:01 AM PDT Nearly infinitely adjustable (overstated by only a little bit) back support for the backpacking experience you’ll love to love. It takes either a very dedicated or very rich or very sponsored designer to spend a giant amount of time on one component of a larger product. What Jacob Howell has done here is to focus not on the carrying capabilities of the pack, but ability of that back to rest as nicely as possible on the back of the carrier. I’ve been to Montana, believe it or not, and I’ve had a large pack like this on my back for a week’s time. It’s basically terrible, especially for one who doesn’t wear a giant thing like this very often at all. It had between 2 and 6 straps for adjustment, all very basic, all mostly useless. If I’da had this particular system attached to my luggage, surely three weeks I’d have spent. Check out all the cushions and pulleys and whatnot! Then take a look at a concept Yanko’s covered in the past, a strangely similar project called the VertaBrate Back Massager - perhaps they could work in tandem? Posted: 04 Jun 2009 12:00 AM PDT Being fussy while using a public loo is quite justifiable coz your personal hygiene is at stake. The "Ultimate Clean Toilet" here is quite a unique concept that addresses the issue of hygiene and practicality. It's a turn-around concept, where one side features a urinal and the other a sit-down commode. You can swivel-around this two-way design system with the flick of a button. It self-sanitizes using Steam and UV. I reckon it would be the ideal solution for Public Toilets, but its groovy style qualifies it for the rich-and-famous loos! Posted: 03 Jun 2009 10:22 AM PDT This is one lean, mean and green floating machine. Part stealth fighter, part 007 fantasy, this 47 foot “CODE X” Yacht by Swiss Yacht builder CODE X, is a catamaran style power yacht that is not only ubber-luxurious but a technological wet dream. Packed with the latest in LED touchscreen control panels that delivers complete automated control over such things like the solar/hybrid power system to the GPS-controlled 'virtual anchor' system that utilises the electric motors to maintain a stationary position regardless of wind or currents. If you get tired of saving the planet and creeping around in near silent mode, you can rock the docks with the twin Ilmor Formula One engines, delivering a hefty 710hp. This Swiss design features a Kevlar/carbon shell with phototropic-shaded windows. The deck is UV-resistant with a heat-repellent shell ensuring you are hotter than your ride. Ten Inspirational And Creative Bionic Designs Posted: 03 Jun 2009 07:55 AM PDT Design is a heady mix of inspiration and perspiration. One avenue that some designers seriously contemplate but rarely incorporate is Biomimetics. It's kinda tough implementing engineering systems and modern technology to ideas inspired by nature and animals. Here is a look at Ten Creative Bionic Designs that look awesome and are almost as perfect as their inspiration. Almost, coz you can't get better than Mother Nature. 10) Mercedes-Benz's Boxfish Inspiration The eminent aerodynamics and efficiency of the form of a boxfish proved to be the base of this 2005 Mercedes-Benz. This very cute streamlined car has a 65% lower drag coefficient than other compact cars that were out at its time. 9) Philips Webcam by Flynn Product Design Creepy animals evoke creepy designs as well, like this Philips webcam by Flynn Product Design. A cross between a spider and octopus (maybe even a monster); the legs help re-position the camera to a favored nook. 8 ) Morphotex Structural Colored Fibers Inspired by Morpho Butterflies Morphotex fibers that you see here are inspired by the "vibrant blue" of the Morpho butterflies. Apparently these butterflies' wings are made of many layers of proteins that refract light in different ways. The vivid colors are mimicked in these Morphotex fibers sans the use of dyes or pigments. 7) Lotusan Paint Inspired by Sacred Lotus The complex surface of large-winged insects such as butterflies and sacred lotus remain dirt-free thanks to their complex surface topography and the way it interacts with the physics of water molecules. Hydrophobic surface allows self-cleaning; this is the premise of the Lotusan exterior coating. This coating uses the principles of micro-structure to automatically become clean after a rain-shower. This balloon floater takes its inspiration from the manta ray. It's a remote-controlled hybrid floater with a helium-filled ballonet and a beating wing drive. Here is a set of Bionic Penguins that are actually autonomous underwater vehicles that can navigate through the seas and establish "differentiated, variable behavior patterns in group operation." 4) Bullet Train Inspired by The Kingfisher In a bid to resolve the extremely loud claps that occurred when Japan’s bullet train emerged from tunnels, Japanese engineers resorted to the profile of a Kingfisher Bird. The nosecone of the train was designed after looking at how effortlessly the bird dove into the water beak-first. 3) Lily Inspired Water Mixer by Pax Technologies The centripetal spirals of the lily flower aid with the flow of liquid. This inspired designers to come up with this water mixer that mixes more liquid with a fraction of the horse power generally required. Fish-fin inspired Lunocet is an ideal aid for swimmers. It's made from silicon covered in carbon fiber with a titanium footplate. This system gives you the same power on a downstroke as an upstroke. Power Swimming here we come! 1) Humpback Whales Inspired Water Turbines Tubercle Technology or the bumps found on the fins of a Humpback whale is the inspiration behind the wind turbine blades. Using the whale-fin design has made the turbines quieter, more reliable when winds fail, and apparently perform even better in turbulent winds! No Tags |
