Elaborate Kitchens Really Need to Be Smart Dressed

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 03:15 AM PDT

Must it always have to be about kitchens with lack of space? Can't we for once focus on showing off smart products on counter-tops or wall mounted goodies! I vote for a change in perspective and say that stuff like the SmartSpace Dry Food Dispenser be on the forefront. It's good to hold pastas, breakfast cereals, pulses etc, plus you can let your creativity get the better of you and fill it up in a very decorative way with color-coordinated dry snacks and beans.

The wall mounted version or the counter top dispenser ooze with style and detailing. For instance the dispensing knob looks cute and works like a tap, and the measuring cup at the bottom measures out contents with accuracy.

Twist And Trash The Can

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 01:49 AM PDT

There are two things make the NNew Can stand out; one it has a deliberate spiral shape and two its opening-clip has an uplifted indent. The reason for the spiral shape is obvious, it makes it easier for you to twist and crush the can with hand and dump it into the trashcan. And the reason for the indent in the clip is so that you can open the can easily without chipping a nail. I endorse the second reason wholeheartedly coz I always manage to clip mine while opening my soda-can!

Moisture Collectors

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 12:01 AM PDT

Inspired by the Giving Tree, this project called the “Savior Bud” latches on to trees (one of Earth’s most generous living things) and uses it’s natural recycling processes to obtain water. In a simple process which basically involves collecting the moisture from the leaves and emptying it out into containers, the Savior Bud takes one more step toward acceptable living conditions in Africa.

As our intrepid designers note, Africa is plagued twice by their hydration situation. Twice because not only is their water supply low, but the water that’s available is often undrinkable and polluted.

The process goes like this:

1. Find a broadleaf tree with lots of leaves.

2. Opening the Savior Bud like a giant clamp, surround a few leaves, and release. The Savior Bud should now be containing the leaves like you see in the picture below, sort of like a greenhouse.

3. In about four hours, the leaves will have produced about one cup of water. Turning the bottom of the bud like a faucet will release the water to be put into a separate container for drinking.

Additional details below. I wouldn’t mind one of these for camping or something like that, would you?

Also, C-3P0 not required.

Straw Sneakers

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 12:01 AM PDT

In this project, designer HoDong Sung took on the task of redesigning a two thousand year old shoe. A shoe design, I should say, not a old rotten shoe. The Bio Mituri is the 2009 re-design of the traditional Mituri straw shoe from Korea. Reducing pollution and increasing style points at the same time! Enjoy this and Sung’s fantastic industrial design travels and shoe-history in real sneaker comfort!

First let me tell you a tiny bit about HoDong Sung. Born and raised in “polution-city” North Korea. What I mean is Sung has vivid memories of the low eco standards in the country, more specifically in their high-quality athletic footwear factories in the 1980s. From there Sung spent time developing industrial design skills in super-eco-clean Australia. Then Sung was a footwear designer for Nike in Oregon, USA. Then on to Adidas in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

This path, along with the changing and ever-greening times, Sung began designing an eco-friendly no-performance-sacrificed set of shoes. For the Bio Mituri the “main idea is combining Korean traditional Mituri upper design with western developed sole structure, which is the perfect marriage of natural material with ergonomics.”

A. Mituri twisted straw replaced with bamboo yarn for durability, eco-friendliness. (Anti-bacterial, non-allergenic)

B. Mituri adjustability improved upon with new upper structure with a string system that wraps top, bottom, heel together all at once.

C. Mituri weak points done away with using biodegradable foam midsole. This sole biodegrades 50 times faster than the average shoe.

D. Production reduction (combining toe cap, heel counter, insole, and midsole in to one injection-molded midsole) minimizes CO2 emissions. Also has recycled tire outsole.

E. Glue used to connect outsole and midsole is water-based cement, avoiding chemical bonds that pollute.

Crystal To Open Doors

Posted: 28 Oct 2009 12:00 AM PDT

The Open-Me is a fancy crystal ring that doubles up as a security agent. Besides looking like a hip piece of jewelry, the geometric cut of the crystal is the key to opening your doors. A 3-D scanner embedded in the door lock scans the facets of crystal, and pops open only after authenticating the cut. Only probs is that in a fit of rage, if you ever smash that crystal, you'd be locked out forever!
