Lean On Me

Posted: 24 Feb 2009 02:56 AM PST

This post comes to you straight from the heart, because I have been in a situation where I have had to care for my mother each time she had her joints replaced. I'm talking about 2 hips and 2 knee replacement surgeries! Professionals like nurses and physiotherapists or family members like me, who have to look after such patients need to take extra care (of themselves) else risk injury to back or muscles. Atlas is a support exoskeleton for the caregiver that reduces risk of injury.

Simple tasks of helping the patient to change sides or taking them to the toilet can unknowingly put the caregiver at risk, if they don't maintain the correct posture. I remember a time when I almost got a catch in my back because I was not carefully while making my mother sit up in bed.

The Atlas is a powered exoskeleton that deciphers the electrical activity in the user's muscles and measures the pressure that is put on different contact areas when in use. Using this combo of readings as a feed, the machine's computer promptly processes the info and reacts almost as fast as a human reflex. It runs on internal batteries that can be recharged via the nearest power outlet. A combination of small powerful electric motors are placed within each joint giving the user the ability to maneuver people who weigh up to 100 kgs, without any strain.

Four years and four surgeries later, I may think I'm a pro caregiver to my mom, but rest assured next time around (I hope there is no next-time!) I will lean on the Atlas for some support.

Suicidal Drama Queen!

Posted: 24 Feb 2009 12:57 AM PST

Looks like not being Chinese means missing out on a lot of fun, I don't even know what Jiong is! Apparently its a Chinese character that sports a half-smiling and half-fainting face, and is very popular on Internet. People use its caricature as an emoticon to display shock and dramatize a situation. Designer Haikun Deng plans to make a drama queen out of Jiong cause she has fashioned it to "commit suicide" if you slam the door shut! SLAM and the bl@@dy door knob hits you hard in your hands!

I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight (centrifugal force in action), much like an emotional actress!
Pop it back into place after you kids have had your tickles!

WAR! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? Good Lighting!

Posted: 24 Feb 2009 12:36 AM PST

As the story goes, shortly after being elected president of the United States in 1981, Ronald Reagan was shown around the Pentagon by his chief of staff, James Baker. At the end of the tour, Reagan asked why they hadn’t seen the “War Room”? Baker explained that it didn’t exist, except in a movie. The movie was Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic “Dr. Strangelove” and the designer was legendary set designer Sir Ken Adams. Ken’s creations are the inspiration behind the design of this “AIRFLITE” by designers KINZO for idee.design.licht. The huge flame-red laquered ring of aluminium and acrylic hides four circle segments with arranged dimmable fluorescent tubes to create intelligent light distribution – 70 per cent of the light shine upwards to be reflected by the ceiling, 30 per cent shine downwards. With all this cool lighting, one may be inspired to start a conflict or read a book…your choice.

Emergency Air Or Pretend You’re A Dolphin

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 10:16 AM PST

I’ve only been scuba diving once and the entire time I kept thinking, “what if I run out of air?” Silly question since I had a huge tank strapped to my back and an instructor tethered to me but that ’sinking’ feeling kept nagging at me. Had I had the Phantom which sits on the chest plate of your wet suit, I may have felt more reassured. The simple device holds 5 minutes worth of air. Not sure if that’s enough but it’s the little things that count.
