San Francisco Facade

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:35 AM PDT

Pinch me I’m giddy. I love this new renovation in San Francisco b Natoma Architects. They’ve retained the unique look and feel only found in the city by the Bay but there are several modern touches that push this building into the future. The perforated metal facade is the most noticeable addition, providing shade and privacy. The interior is an minimal as it gets without going overtly stark.

Analyzing Movement

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:22 AM PDT

There aren’t any portable devices to analyze body movement. Most of them are giant lumbering machines that require whole rooms. A portable device opens doors to numerous commercial applications all thanks to the advent of small accelerometers. Imagine doctors like orthopedists getting valuable information about how you move to determine cause and treatment. One already exists thanks to designer Ricardo Sa Freire and he’s planning another for entertainment, training, and extreme sports. Endless possibilities.

Interactive Solar Energy Eye

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:05 AM PDT

While solar power and other such similar “green energy” solutions might very well be the solution to the 36% of carbon dioxide pollution sent up by commercial buildings in Europe, the business owners are reluctant to join the team. What this particular interactive eye on the wall does is to connect the customer to the direct result of the business using environmentally sound solutions - in particular, solar energy.

As the video below shows, this big eye-type of device lights up with pretty colors when you come up on it. Sensor-driven LED lights, that’s what that is. Also in this device is “local” glass and woodcraft, reducing the price of the unit.

This device works in concert with an unnamed solar-power system installed elsewhere on the building. What the device shows is the benefit of the system. With pretty lights and simple-to-read info-graphics, the “Interactive Solar Energy” device displays “the conversion of sun rays into liters of heated water and the power current during the current minute.”

And did I mention there’s pretty colors? Owa-weewa!

NOTE: I just did another entry on solar-powered awesomeness today. Check that one out too, if you’ve got the need for total sunflower speed!

Love Affair With London And Lego

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:05 AM PDT

Clearly the Volkswagen Conerto Concept Car is inspired by London's rustic charm and the sustainability of Lego. While I won't get into the personal journey of London retro-modern muse, I'll explain to you how Lego is involved in the scenario. Take a piece of Lego block from any era, and you will see that it fits the current version like a glove. Using this idea as a base, the construction of the Conerto is such that it allows you to fit pieces of the car in a similar fashion.

It's like dividing a car according to its section or functionality, thus transforming the entire car design. New innovations in the automobile industry make it possible to integrate suspension parts and customize wheel configuration. Moreover using natural materials for finishing the exteriors instead of paint, makes the Lego-brick-like construction whimsical and appealing.

Here's what Hong has to say about the construction:

A buyer can begin his life with a car as a short wheelbase two-seater, and it can be transformed into a new function by adding new sections or subtracting sections. At the end of the lifecycle it can be dismantled, sold, traded, or used as furniture. The sections can also be locally sourced as different regions have different sustainable materials and economy. Producing the car can be made by factories, which would have a reduced footprint, or at home. Building it yourself makes a connection to your car, rekindling that passion and love for cars.

Measures of great automobile design are not seen through the bends of the sheetmetal, but from the thought and passion underneath it.

Reflecting Ironing Board

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:02 AM PDT

Your ironing board need not be some magical piece of invention coz when you don't use it you're simply gonna stow it away in some crappy corner. Only if you were as smart as Therese! Adding a dash of functionality to the board, his idea is to transform it into a full-lenght mirror, when not in use. Super Intelligent I say! Lay it flat to iron your clothes; flip it vertical and its shiny mirror in the underbelly! I can see this going into production SOON.

Solar Powered Sunflower Jaguar

Posted: 08 Jul 2009 12:01 AM PDT

Welcome to the future - where plants take us by surprise and seal our fates as the dear or dying species on this planet! Our only defense is the “Jaguar Mark XXI.” Designer Christopher Pollard has made this nature defense vehicle. It drives like a mother. Then when parked, the black panels activate. These panels are photovoltaic, lift from the car automatically, and face the sun, like the sunflower. Scary, right?

It’s totally science. Watch the video. You’ll see it.

The “living” panels signify “the synergy between the car’s energy replenishing function and the natural science from which it takes its inspiration.” The photovoltaic panels use solar power - a power you may have heard of - to power the car. Additional details bist written below. It’s like a -oh what to do you call it - Transformer!

Green car / in disguise!
