Posted: 28 Aug 2009 03:57 AM PDT Here's the thing, you know you have to recycle waste, and many of us go through the motions, but there's a percentage that finds excuses for not doing so. With the Braun Envi urban dustbin, you are actually doing your bit by "promoting composting from biodegradable waste." Basically when you toss your apple core into this bin, bio-reactive substances based on photo catalysis start doing their job and rehashes the trash as compost. The substances also remove odors and speed up the process. The idea is to use these huge bins in public spaces, where people can drop their biodegradable trash, and the compost be collected and used later on. I love the greens on the side. Main materials used in constructing the bin: stainless steel, aluminum, glass, polypropylene, polyethylene. Just two questions:

Hanging Towel Dryer Hits a Raw Nerve Posted: 28 Aug 2009 01:57 AM PDT I have had so many fights with my husband and kids over wet towels. I mean, how much time does it take to go and hang out your wet used towel for drying? Less than Five Minutes! But No Sireez, they just won't listen; they heap it up on the bed, floor; worse keep it wet n hanging in the loo. It's for me to dry those stinky pieces! Wish I had a genie manufacture this Hanging Towel Dryer, which is shaped like a bathroom clothes rail, but is actually an air drier. Drape a wet towel over it, switch it on and in a few minutes or more, you have a warm dry towel! I so love this! Designer: Seung Jun Jeong |
Ten Exciting Boats and Yachts Concepts Posted: 28 Aug 2009 12:00 AM PDT My fascination with houseboats and yachts started way back in the 80's, when it was safe for people to travel to Kashmir. We spent a week-long vacation in this charming houseboat on Dal Lake. Boats here were typically rustic with intricate woodwork and aristocratic charisma. Cut to the present times, old-world charm no longer exists and mean-machines with high-tech booty are in. Moving ahead with times is a good thing if it means adding luxury and efficiency to the deal. Let's look at the Ten Most Exciting Boats and Yachts Concepts seen on YD. 10) Volitan by Designnobis Studio With a name that means "flying fish", this futuristic boat boasts of solid sails and harnesses wind power and solar energy to function. The flapping-of-wings like design does have its purposes, they add stability to the structure in high-winds and host the solar panels as well. 9) Origami Boat by Matteo Signorini Become an origami master in boats; only don't use paper, but this corrugated plastic surf-bard-like-structure instead. Folding up neatly for easy transportation, this one's good for that solitude, soul-searching expeditions. 8 ) Urban Skiff by Thomas Giger, Anita Meyer, Florian Ueker, Femke Morf & Thomas Etter A duffle bag that holds a sail and everything else to assemble a full-fledge dinghy! How convenient and jiffy can it get! 7) Corvette Stingray Inspired Boat Design by Bo Zolland Automotive magic? Only this one doesn't have the wheels but speeds on water instead. 6) Loup de Mer House Boats by Espen E. Erikstad Incidentally, this one's designed for the student community of Oslo. I think it's rather extravagant from the crummy dorms they are used to living in. 5) Tu Fin by I.Kiryakov, S.Ballmeier, K.Eichelberg & M.Dressler Play Jesus and cross the sea; big bonus…stay fit in the process with a full-body-workout "Nordic Walking Style". That's the Tu Fin for you. 4) SENTORI 58R by Christian Gumpold & Christopher Gloning A yacht that reflects luxury and style; but unfortunately is still a concept! SENTORI 58R is an ambitious project taken up by 2 postgraduates who promised to build a prototype by Feb 2009. Since we haven't heard a word on the project, I'm assuming it's still in process. The specs projected sound too good to be true, so I'm hoping they pull this off. 3) Oculus by E. Kevin Schopfer This is the kind of yacht you would love spending your summer vacations on. Quoting a famous tagline from an advert; "Neighbor's envy; Owner's pride!" 2) Kite Sailing Kitano Yacht by Stefani Krucke This concept boat has a green lining to it by including kite sailing technology to the automation. Compared to a normal sail the kite has less surface area but still generates enough force so that even a gentle breeze lifts the hull to a planing speed. Equipped with a hydraulically operated centerboard, even sailing in shallow water and littorals are possible without risk. Radically different from the usual concepts that we see. 1) Infanitas by E. Kevin Schopfer Kudos is in order for Schöpfer Yachts; their Infinitas re-defines luxury travel on seas. Inspired by Infinity, the symbol is abstractly expressed within the yacht's elevation. It can accommodate 12 guests and crew and has all the requisites to appease Mr. Moneybags; helipad and swimming pool included! |
Posted: 27 Aug 2009 10:39 AM PDT It gets weirder in here every day. Wouldn’t you agree? Today we’ve got the Nooka Zot-V, and it’s a doozie. I’m sure you’re a bit familiar with the NOOKA line of watches, as Yanko’s definitely had some moments in time with them before. And here’s their new deal! It’s wild, it’s weird, it’s entirely Nookatastic: Nooka Zot-V. You’ll be pressing so many buttons that you’ll forget your smartphone at the coffee shop. The Zot-V comes in deepest Black, three shades to the wind of Silver, or hipstertastic Gold!* It tells time in the weirdest way, the coolest way, and it’s got hella functions. Alarm! Date! Time! and Chronograph! which is such a fancy word for “stopwatch” that my unsophisticated self had to look it up.
*Made up names. Black and Gold and several Silvers = real. EDIT: and it’s just totally beautiful, isn’t it? So beautiful, in fact, that it’s part of an international beauty contest called Pulchra where you should vote it (and Nutella!) up- go to http://www.pulchra.org/ and put Nooka in number one, and Nutella in number two - then fill in the rest of the blanks with whatever! Then buy me a case of Nutella! Designer: NOOKA |
Digital Photo Frame Packed With Features! Posted: 27 Aug 2009 08:41 AM PDT I love my digital photo frame but this concept called Mint Frame takes the cake. Like other digital frames it displays your photos but also takes pictures with a built-in 2 MP autofocus camera. The adoption of digital frames has been slow and why? - partly because older people find it cumbersome. By turning the frame into a camera, you get instant gratification without the need of a computer or syncing with an online gallery service. The 7 in. touchscreen also displays videos (no mention of what formats) and you can even record narration to photos. I really like the little retractable magnetic stand. Wish my frame had that. My only gripe is the low camera resolution. It’s perfectly suitable for viewing but terrible for print. I guess I’m over complicating what it’s meant for but can’t we bump up the megapixel count to at least 3? Designer: mintselect @ mintpass |
Posted: 27 Aug 2009 08:33 AM PDT Plants still do a much better job at sequestering carbon into oxygen than anything else. They naturally filter the air too and that’s why our green friends are a-okay with me. Problem is my green thumb is cursed. I can’t even keep a cactus alive. The O2 air purifier takes the pain out of the game. Place your potted plant on the O2 and water as usual. Excess water is evaporated and the system accelerates the process of photosynthesis, not to mention keeps tabs on our green friends so you’ll always know when they need water.
