Posted: 05 Nov 2009 05:30 AM PST The concept of Blinds doubling up as Solar Powered Window Air Conditioner is not new, but there is something that makes Briz tad different. Briz uses water as a coolant; water runs through both tubes beneath the bottom part of the blinds emitting dry mist. As water evaporates, it absorbs the heat thus naturally cooling the atmosphere. BTW Solar Power and other concept gimmicks still prevail. Designers: Nari Kim & Pullip Lim |

Posted: 05 Nov 2009 01:01 AM PST The idea behind the Tree & Root Lamp is to make us aware of the fact that we are cutting down way too many trees. So how does Kitae Pak translate this into motion? When positioned inverted in the pot, the lamp signifies a dead root, with the tree cut-off. Upright the lamp and it illuminates the room, depicting the true virtues of a tree and its importance in our lives. Besides the poetic garble, I simply think it's an elegant design that can find pride in many homes. Designer: Kitae Pak |
Posted: 05 Nov 2009 12:01 AM PST So you’re at the library, you’ve got all your stuff spread out, and bam! You’ve gotta potty. You need to use the bathroom but you can’t leave all your stuff there! You’ve got like 16 mp3 machines and 4 laptops and 8 bars of gold! What do you do! You have to gather it all up and put it back in your rucksack and by the time that’s happened, you don’t have to potty anymore! Just say no! No more of this! We need desks that lock down! Choi Minaa has the solution to that! What this system does is to guarantee your gold bars and laptops are safe while you’re in the bathroom. You just gotta lock it down! This is called the “Desk Guard” library desk system and it works with your RFID (Radio-frequency identification) card. This is basically your library card or your student ID card, they’re all RFID now more often than not. So. Step by step: You look for a desk that is clamped shut and empty. Scan your RFID card, it opens. You use it. For a potty break, scan your RFID again. Desk clamps shut. Your stuff is safe! Come back after the bathroom and scan RFID card to open up. Clamp shut after you’re done! Designer: Choi Minaa |
Furniture for a New Design School Posted: 05 Nov 2009 12:01 AM PST What simplicity is this? This set of furniture, seats and tables, is made by students of the school of art and design Saint-étienne in France. What’s fun? It’s made for a new construction of the school of Arts and design of Saint-étienne in the Cité du design. In and beyond that, this is a set of seats and tables with designers in mind. Take a look in particular at the sawhorse-looking constructs there that are made to hold the tabletops up. Imagine how versatile. Imagine how compact these tables and chairs could get. Ease in carrying, moving. Stackability and simplicity. Now if you’ll take a moment to listen here about a design school I was at. I wont name it but you could discover it pretty easily if you try. We had “classrooms of the future” in which there were plugs and switches and projectors and curved tables and nice chairs and everything. -but they didn’t really work any better than the classrooms that had basic tables and basic chairs, outlets around the rim of the room and wireless capability. Point is – the devices we use in design school are built to be versatile in and of themselves, the furniture’s best to be as simple as what you see right here! I think they nailed it. Posted: 05 Nov 2009 12:00 AM PST Dignity and pride in whatever you do, even if it's cleaning the streets. Someone has to the dirty job of cleaning up your litter, and why not equip them with the perfect gear so that they can do a perfect job. With this contention in mind, we have Youn-il Lee designing the Green Fox Street Cleaning Kit for the road sweepers of Seoul. However, it's something that the street-sweepers from the world over can do with. A standard 100-liter bin with special care to the peripherals makes this an ideal design. Features Include:
