Love it or Hate it? You tell us! Posted: 10 Dec 2009 02:51 AM PST While some of you design-savvy critics are vocal about your opinions on design, others use their subtle charms to let us know how the DESIGN SUCKS! A lot of products that are currently being sold on the YD Store were once mere concepts and we'd like to know if they were really worth the efforts? Did these products deserve to make it into the physical world or would it have been better left on the drawing board? We want to hear what you think! Tell us if you love the product, hate the product or are undecided until you have more information. Submit your opinions and we'll thank you with a 5% coupon off the Yanko Design Store! |
Posted: 10 Dec 2009 02:02 AM PST Hail the mother of sustainability! Let me give thee a new offering! I hope you accept this humble submission of a wind-up mouse. Much like those cute toys that McDonalds doles out, at the expense of a Happy Meal! Only this one aptly christened Sustail, and it works in sync with a computer and keyboard. Wind the mouse with the key kept in its underbelly. Keep winding till you hear a distinct feedback of full charge…and then sussstaaillll….. Designer: Ahmet Bektes |
Posted: 10 Dec 2009 01:30 AM PST If given a free hand and will, designer Maarten Timmer hopes to recreate bike-racing magic with an Electrical Powered Motorcycle! Don't be so lofty and hear his plans out. This is what the VertiGO features: electric propulsion, low noise and emissions, a silent motor, high torque, very fast acceleration, maximum speed on the straights (100 to 150 km ride on a “battery pack”).

Posted: 10 Dec 2009 01:25 AM PST For some odd reason I have this feeling that most designers turn poets and philosophers when they get into the description of their products. For instance designer ShiKai Tseng makes complete poetical sense when he describes the relation between waste paper and recycling it into a vase. The philosophy behind the Moulding Paper Recycling Bin is to give meaning to our paper trash. Fair enough, but I'm still to find the logical, technical and feasible reasoning behind this. Can anyone help? Designer: ShiKai Tseng |
Carzor! The Stubble Eliminator! Posted: 10 Dec 2009 12:15 AM PST Have you ever woken up one day, gotten ready for work, prepared for the biggest meeting of your LIFE, and realize, oh NO! There’s stubble on your face? Well let me tell you about this thing then! It is called Carzor! And it is made for you! It’s the size of a credit card and it’ll be your companion for life! Not only is it a razor, it’s a mirror. Not the same thing. They come apart! The whole contraption is the dimensions of a credit card or a license. The blades are stored safely behind the mirror while it’s in your pocket, and it’s just totally easy to use. AND THE BEST PART IS: There are several different kinds of scents you can put on below the blade! You can have mint, sandal, lemon, ocean, or orange! Kick the laziness out! P.S. Don’t mistake my craziness for sarcasm. I am actually really pumped up about this design. Yes, please! Designer: Kuo Chia Hung |
Driftwood Table! Driftwood Table! Posted: 10 Dec 2009 12:10 AM PST For years now, people who buy hand-made goods have been pumped up about weathered wood. Barnwood! Shackwood! And the mother of them all, really nice Driftwood! Driftwood is, as you can imagine, wood that’s ideally taken off nice old buildings and thrown in the river for one reason or another, then found by some intrepid craftsperson like the people we’ve got right here. It’s the Flotsam and Jetsam table! Designers at Marcus O’Reilly Architects have really pumped up their hands, sandpaper, and screws to bring you this fabulous table. Made from REAL driftwood found on the beaches of St Kilda. Each bit of wood was trimmed to size, wire brushed, coloured, waxed, and placed on a minimal raw black steel frame. “Unique markings, stamps, holes and hardware in the wood alludes to the origins of each individual piece of driftwood.” – that’s what I like to hear. This is recycling at it’s most beautiful. And check it out, this table has already won an award: Craft Victoria Design and Innovation Award for 2009, and just got done being exhibited: Melbourne's 2009 Fringe Furniture Festival, and is about to be exhibited again!: The Edge in Sydney, AND it was featured in Craft Victoria's "Encounter." So get out there and make some stuff! Designer: Marcus O’Reilly Architects |
Posted: 10 Dec 2009 12:01 AM PST This right here is a cellular phone that will last you five years. After that, it’s just a twist and about a minute of dissembling and you’ve got an 85% recyclable stack of materials on your hands. Kind of nice, yes? Why is it all green, you ask? So that the plastic can be melted down and re-molded without any discoloration! Super neat. This lovely design was made by James Barber in hopes of creating a new, more conscious market for cell phones. He did some fabulous research that pointed toward the energy used to make and the energy used BY a cellphone in it’s whole life. Can you guess which was more? For a cellphone used for 2 years, the energy used to create the phone is “roughly 3 times larger” than the energy used by the phone in it’s lifetime! James Barber’s trying to push those amounts of energy closer to equal. To do that, he’s created this extremely rough and tough phone with, yes!, easily replaceable parts, nice, pretty design, and horayy! 85% recyclable parts! I dig it. Or rather, since it wont be in a land-fill with all the other cellphones, I USE it. Designer: James Barber |
