Posted: 12 Jan 2010 04:13 AM PST With all the energy you expend while jumping rope, imagine using some to power a handy torchlight fitted within the skipping rope handles. Torchlight in any form is a good idea, but the cool quotient in this Jump Light comes from the fact that you won't need any batteries to power the bulb. It simply runs by converting the kinetic energy from your jumps to electric energy. Now if that isn't motivational enough for you to skip just a bit more! Designers: Hyun Joo Lee & Eu Tteum Lee |
TravSAFE Luggage Aint Nothin to Mess With Posted: 12 Jan 2010 02:23 AM PST Alert the airplane police! They’re about to have a whole lot of confused airport burglars on their hands. This project by Shing Lo’s got the “Design Out Crime” tagline attached to it. Why? Because it’s a one-luggage thief deterrent, that’s why. It’s got a honeycomb interior. Locks. A passive alarm system. An active alarm system (that you can set off.) And it looks so fashionable! Active alarm system: should the thief who wants your bag get caught trying to rip the bag from your hands, just pull the trigger, breaking it off, and boom! Sparks shoot off and smoke pours from the package. Not only that, an audio alarm sounds loudly too! This thievery will not be private. Passive alarm system: should the thief take your bag while you’re foolishly forgetting you even had it, have no fear! Unless the thief is lazy and decides to drag it across the floor that is, because this alarm activates when it senses it’s a certain distance away from the floor. This time no smoke though, only loud noises. All this and a fabulously reinforced interior, honeycomb style. Designer: Shing Lo |
Posted: 12 Jan 2010 01:49 AM PST Back in May last year I did a roundup of the Most Unconventional Umbrellas seen here on YD. I wish I had stumbled across the Air Umbrella then, because it's the mother of unconventional designs! Imagine an umbrella with no canopy! The barrier between you and the raindrops is a sheet of steady air that is blown out by this hollow pipe. Physics and a lot of engineering stuff is clogging my brains to accept this design, but if I put these dark clouds of doubt out of the way, we may have something in this concept. Think about it!

Tricked Out Appliances for Those On Wheels Posted: 12 Jan 2010 01:23 AM PST These are some tripped out appliances. This product set right here is called “Spot.” It’s full title is “Spot – Appliance Design for All.” Why? Because it’s designed for people who’re confined to wheelchairs or (I’d imagine) just short in stature. Three appliances, a fridge, a dishwasher, and an oven, for the supreme ease of use for all. (Post preview for everyone: I vote fridge for winner, how about you?) On the oven there’s of course a touchscreen digital interface as well as motorized elevator rails for ease of access. The stove in any average home is fairly low anyway, so this one might not look that different, but the slightly lower stature and that elevator exhaust will really make all the difference in the long run. On the dishwasher there’s once again digital controls with a touch screen, easy-access dish rack on top, and a fold over cover. Same deal as the oven in that it appears pretty much the same as a conventional oven, but the slight modifications make the difference. The refrigerator has a heck of a lot of unconventional differences from your average fridge, somuchso that I’d friggin love to own one fer sure. Sliding trays and bins, an electr-magnetic door latch system (intense!), and LED night lights activated by a person sneaking around for a midnight snack. Touchscreen digital interface (didn’t see that one comin, did ya?!) Music player (wait, what?) with USB port for plugging in your USB keys and unloading a bunch of music for storage and play. Holy crap biggest MP3 player EVER! And of course a control panel choc-full of options like time, date, temp, music control, LED control, security lock (for those electro-magnets), and other general preferences. Holy god’s own refrigerator, Batman! Designer: Hideki Kawata |
Posted: 12 Jan 2010 12:01 AM PST You know it happens sometimes. Someone gets a remote like in those sci-fi movies or Adam Sandler walks by and boom, you can’t hear a thing! It’s crap! So what do you do? You get ahold of Dan Carrillo. That guy will hook you up with a combo that cannot be beat for the sound-impared. The “Emmerse” system uses glasses, a wristband, and an itsy-bitsy clampable keyboard. Speak or see, type or view. The glasses are where half of the magic happens. In them, you can see text of the person you’re conversing with, complete with tone (like if they’re totally pissed), and icons. The icons you see in the first picture below are these icons. Don’t get hit by a bus! Then the keyboard: it’s like one of those click-bracelets that were hot fashion for kids in the 1990’s. On this you can type in what you’d like to say and it’ll be spoken aloud by the wristband in a voice derived from you, the user. Alternatively, the keyboard can display your text on it’s back, just incase you’re in the library. I wish it also had sensors so I could target enemies and one extra accessory missile launcher that I could mount to the back of a truck. Designer: Dan Carrillo |
