Mighty Pedal Power With Electric Help Posted: 25 Jan 2010 05:26 AM PST Hybrid cycles have been around but they rarely take into consideration the elements. This makes their usage restrictive to fair weather. Slotting itself into the "commuter vehicle" bracket, the Emcycle tries to overcome this limitation by including a roof and Velcro-detachable side panels. Basically you can cocoon yourself and pedal or take electrical assiatnce to get you to your destination. There are three drive options ranging from AM (I have energy) through to PM (I’m tired!). Features:

It will be available at around $2500 – $4500 and the plan is to get the vehicle into production by 2011 in time for the London Olympics which it could be well utilized for by renting travelers / commuters. Designer: Michael Scholey CAD Model and Images: Adam Schacter |

Posted: 25 Jan 2010 01:15 AM PST There is a saying that one should judge a person by the shoe he wears, for they reveal his true status. The New York Urban Fashion Shoe (NYUF) is a step in this direction, but comes with handy technology to make it the perfect fit. To elaborate: the shoes are made from leather and subjected to preformed silicone treatment with heat (applied on Technic Fabric and Neoprene) to make them water resistant. The rubber sole is injected and its interior has a gel structure to keep your feet comfy. I love the variations given to the basic structure, especially the Zebra pattern. Designer: Adrián Castro |
Posted: 25 Jan 2010 01:00 AM PST Pratt student Suhyun Kim is quite concerned about the deaf folks and wants them to enjoy technology as much as we do. Her Visual Sound is a mobile phone for the hearing impaired that converts voice input to text and text input to voice. The design features two handy pillars that scroll sideways to expose the roll-out display. To communicate, the impaired person feeds in the text onto the touchscreen display, which gets converted to voice simulation for the person on the other end of the phone and vice versa. The only drawback that I foresee is the time taken to input the text and converting it to sound. It may deter long distance calls, but on the flipside any form of communication is better than being mum! Image Credit: Su |
Roger Roger, Talking on Music Gloves Posted: 25 Jan 2010 12:30 AM PST So you’re snowboarding. You’ve got your Burton board, your Burton nopattern jacket, your Burton snowpants, Burton long underwear. But what’s missing! Your gloves! Oh just slap on a pair of Burton gloves, right? WRONG! You need some music, just use an iPod right? NO WAY! Put the music and the gloves (and the cellphone for that matter) all together. It’s the HR Burton music and voice communication gloves! Oh joy! How I’ve always wanted to talk on a two-way radio through my gloves! Yes! Everyone whose ever snowboarded, skied, sled dogged, etc, knows how bundled up you really need to be to avoid the cold. We live in the future now, so people not only wish to board down a hill all nice and toasty, they want to talk to their friends and listen to their music on the way down too! We’ll here’s that all. All of it in the gloves. Whip em out. Designer: William Mazuel |
Posted: 25 Jan 2010 12:10 AM PST Welcome to a collection by The Emotion Lab, a Barcelona design studio made up of four superstars who’re aiming to go wild with their designs. In this post you’re about to get educated about their stack o’ products that goes by the name Urban Collection. Functional items that “do their job without getting noticed.” In the Urban Collection, these items are taken into the home, remixed, and made personal. Look below for four items of lovely proportions, each of them from the Urban Collection by The Emotion Lab. Designer: The Emotion Lab 1. Antenna Hanger: Since the dawn of the television age, a classic icon of the jungle city. Now converted to a hanger system to hold your coats and tophats. Pip pip! 46 x 40 x 150 cm 2. Space Divider: Based on the warning road barrier defending the world against falling in giant holes. This divider has the bonus feature of shutters for extra privacy for the hole. 120 x 38 x 170 cm 3. Scaffold Shelving: From the taller cities comes this floor-to-ceiling adaptation of the ubiquitous scaffold. Shelving made industrial. 50 x 50 x 300 cm 4. Mirror Light: Oh my goodness, it’s big brother. Wait, no! That’s not even a camera, it’s just one of those helpful convex mirrors! This light shines ambient and has the alternate title “Emotion Lamp.” 40 x 47 x 40 cm 5. Room Cone: Those orange cones, seen the world over, a universal language for “watch out, but if you really need to get through, just run over” is now a candle cover. Alternate use: key holder. 18 x 18 x 24 cm |
Posted: 25 Jan 2010 12:01 AM PST It was the great philosopher Tupac Amaru Shakur who once noted the beauty of a rose growing up from between the cracks in the concrete of an urban sidewalk. Even though it might be in a place where it shouldn’t be, it makes the person who experiences it love it for what it went through to get there. It makes the experience of seeing that rose more fantastic and unreal than it’d be seeing it in a garden, by a whole lot, even! That’s what these fabulous benches are about. The fantastical nature of human creation. It’s like being in a fantasy land, sitting on or experiencing a “Petal Bench.” During the day they sit out, appearing as gigantic flowers open to offer the average fanciful fairy (you) a place to rest. At night, the flower can be closed to follow the nature of flowers that also follow this timely ritual. Also, because during the day the Petal Bench collects solar energy, at night it lights up!
