Posted: 01 Sep 2009 02:06 AM PDT Our roofs are oft left neglected coz most of us don't have green thumbs to transform them into roof gardens. If the inclination is there, then these modular pots called Natural Protector can come in quite handy. What they do is they open up on all four sides to form a waterproof layout-base for growing plants. A network of these opened-up pots on your rooftop plus a couple of fancy seedlings, and you're good to go. Designer: Kyoungho Ha |
Posted: 01 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT This light is alive. That’s what I mean. I remember when I first realized that the terrifying glowing death orb coming to eat me when I woke up in the middle of the night was actually my Apple tower. This isn’t that! But it is alive, and it is a lamp. The light has emotions in the following ways an I quote, “The subtle ambient lights randomly change to a natural, calming rhythm – adding life to an otherwise still environment.” And that’s what I call a living light. But maybe I don’t know! I’m not a living lamp expert! Maybe you can be the one to discover the magic! The lamp can be set up on it’s own on a desk, mounted on a wall any number of ways, and is powered by the USB port or USB power supply adapter. Designer: Tim Richter of Naolab |
Posted: 01 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT Take a taste! The oddities we’ve had here at Yanko are some to throw you for a twist, and this is no exception! No exception at all! Pour yourself a glass of the old Winyard with the milk can, or dip yourself some savory flavor with the oil platter! Shovel yourself some salt with the cellar or dump some vinegar on your dish with the flask! These are all bits and pieces from the porcelain tableware set designed by Aldo Bakker. Take a peek at the exquisite handiwork crafted into each piece. Each piece so simple, each piece so very unique. Only in this set would the water carafe of such a caliber look so very normal. It looks downright average compared to the pipe-like milk can! Drink up! Designer: Aldo Bakker |
Community Cycles Are For Sharing Posted: 01 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT Samsung Freecycle is a good lesson in community living; a system that teaches sharing is caring…. In this system you got a base unit mounted on a cycle, a device that you carry with you and a generator; all hooked to each other wirelessly. A bike sharing service is implemented and the twist is that users themselves got to manage the effective working of it. It's like this: I need a cycle pronto, and I spot one round the bend, I message to the current user, via my Sammy device (to his device), requesting him to allow me to use the bike. Once I get the all-clear, the Freecycle device with me and the bike communicate and tango together, unlocking the bike for me to use. The unlocked bike is for me to use till someone else requests me to hand it over to them. In between all this theory, there a GPS navi involved and vocal translator (with integrated bone conduction earphones). This navi system rattles off info like news, comments, POI; basically adding utility to the whole setup. Freecycle is a good solution for Universities and limited are campuses, where the community is small and the commute restricted. BTW, this concept was a finalist at the Samsung Young Designer's Award last year, thus the liberal Samsung branding. Posted: 01 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT Unique name and equally unique in function! I wouldn't want to dilute its creativity by losing you in heaps of word. Keeping it short: Zilborrerstea is a deck that you can use in water bodies like lakes or the beaches. Hop onto it, rest a while or simply sunbathe. Take a look at the AMAZING video of its idea-to-end product journey. Totally mindblowing! Designer: Ithaka Design |
