Wake Up Little Suzie

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 06:08 AM PDT

Aphelion is this concept alarm clock that has a unique snooze function. When the alarm goes off, a ball flies off its cradle to across the room. This also triggers the snooze function. So in essence if you get up and retrieve the ball and place it in its cradle, it's not like switching off the alarm. It's like activating the snooze, so in case you hit the sack again, the ball will be triggered off after 10 minutes or so. You need to manually turn off the alarm switch. I only hope the ball is made of soft sponge so as not to damage anything. Cool FM Radio and neat design by your bedside!

Magnetic Attraction

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 03:56 AM PDT

Aufhanger is the re-design of an ordinary hanger sans hooks. It uses magnets within its body to latch onto the steel rod of the wardrobe. The body of the hanger could be of cast aluminum, but wood or plastic can also be used. Magnets like Neodymium N42 or N50 can also be used for their strength and stability. A hook-less hanger not only looks classy but is quite functional as well. BTW, the magnet part is nestled on the top rim.

I would like to leave you with this wonderful line by the designer: 'the hook over the hook below the hook pulling out the hook… and i just wanted to take a look…'

Tin Can; best used for beans, worms, fruits…but apt for light? Yes! If you make it as simplistic as the Tin Can Lights! A sealed surprise just like your can-o-pickles! Peel open the lid to welcome a soft glowy lamp that creates a pleasant ambience. Strum it as a nightlamp or show it off as an eccentric collectable in the living room. Five hundred of these lamps have been crafted for sale, so all those looking for deal head over to those quaint design shops in Israel or click a button.

Oddities in Furniture

Every once in a while, not often!, but sometimes, Yanko Design features a designer who’s more of an artist, more of a visionary looking in to a different dimension. This is one of those times. These particular bits of furniture were collected from the mind of Valentin Loellman, who looked deep inside his dreams, visions, and nightmares, then got some wood and nails and whipped up some neat stuff.

Mostly functional, too! Pick your way through this modge-podge of weirdness and find yourself right in the middle of a seat or table or on top of a dresser that is one of a kind.

I’m reminded of a quote from Weird Al: “You know what? Nobody in this small town appreciates a guy with a good imagination. Some day they’ll all be sorry. They’ll be eating breakfast or something and all of a sudden they’ll say, ‘Hey…!’ We screwed up! We never should have fired George Newman because he’s got imagination!”

And that’s my lesson on industrial design for today.

Braun V-Stol Bathing System

Posted: 22 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT

For those of you who have nursed an ill or bedridden family member, you'll agree that giving them a bath is the most time consuming and fragile moment. Transporting them to and from the showers & keeping them steady during the bath can be a draining experience. The Braun V-Stol System looks at cutting the trauma, by providing a refreshing bath right on the patient's bed. The system consists of an inflatable container in which the patient lays; a shower with hot water at different pressures, a container of water (3 liters capacity) and controls.

The system works this way; you place the inflatable mattress under the patient and inflate it. It becomes like a shallow tub for him to lie in. Hook up the water motor and shower system. After the bath, simply drain out the water from the side to a container and deflate the mattress. Principles of the Venturi effect are used in this system. And details like a comfy elevated headrest has been taken care of.

The V-Stol is more for the terminally ill and old frail folks; from past personal experience of nursing an ill family member, I think this idea is really awesome.
