Follow That Trail Of Footprints Posted: 24 Sep 2009 01:30 AM PDT One of the most important factors in cutting down the risks of the job is the gear that the firefighters use. Safety of Life Fireman's Boots is a clever attempt to ensure that fighters can keep a tab on their partners and locate them instantly, in case of disorientation or the likes. The fireboots make an illuminating footprint on the floor of a room, leaving a trail of the user. Following the glowing footprints, the backup team can trace & reach the rescue worker, should he require it. It's not clear as what illuminant can be used to produce the glow, but I'm sure it has to be one that will not hinder in the firefighting and definitely not add to the mayhem. Posted: 24 Sep 2009 12:07 AM PDT Shade is a tool that allows you to control and sculpt shadows. To define new shadows in the room, you manipulate light through touching and stroking the surface in different ways. Shade also has behavioral automation that detects the way you move and where you place yourself in the room. This automation adjusts the shadows based on your habits. This concept had me scratching my head. “What the hell is the designer talking about!?!” After some thought, it’s as clear as day! You can’t have shade or shadow without light so this product allows you to manipulate shadow which is the causality of light. Wait, did I just confuse you some more? Just think of it this way. It’s a fancy touchscreen light that remembers how you like to have it set. Designer: Olivier Butstraen |
Robotic Wheelchair Wunkerkind! Posted: 24 Sep 2009 12:05 AM PDT Wheelchairs are a dime a dozen but the advent of advance and affordable robotics is truly enabling the disabled. The CARRIER Wheelchair does almost everything - making sure the user is fully independent, capable of traversing any terrain and situation. The frame is specially shaped to maneuver over a commode. A “trap door” opens so you can use the toilet in a dignified manner. No need for awkward transfers or assisted lifts. Stairs and inclines are a cinch too. A “Galileo Wheel” combines a wheel and track into a single drive with advantages from both. The entire chair even lifts to help you reach higher objects. Nice concept tho not the first of its kind - the CARRIER seems well thought out and ripe for production. Hey, I’m all for design that can improve quality of life. The CARRIER was developed as semesterproject at the University of Applied Arts in the Studio Industrial Design 2 Esslinger. Posted: 24 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT These plugs are circular. Holy goodness it is a complete revolution in interior decorating. It’s another step back from decoration, that’s what it is. It’s the pushing back of details, creating a simpler, more chi-flowing world. Isn’t it? Take a vast look at these terrifically simplistic plug-ins and wonder to yourself how you ever lived without their elegant plugness (or lack thereof.) Life isn’t all tiny electronic details, is it? It is when you become a home refurbisher, like my auntie Ginny and auntie Pat. They get down to details when they tear a whole house’s insides down and put them back up. They’re interested in these little things, severely. It’s these little tiny things that are “selling points” on a house. Even something so simple as a plug can sell a house in the head of the buyer. And check it out: me, speaking as a designer who has also installed his fair share of wall plugs, says thusly: these work. They’d be fantastic to use in a new house and holy crap I want them. Posted: 24 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT Upgrading a redundant cellphone means adding to the pile of toxic trash that accumulates all around the world. The Label With Green is a concept phone aims at weaning you off the upgrade mania. To power the phone you need to use ECO-Green Electronic Labels, which are solar paper labels that juice up the phones various components (display, speaker, keypad, camera, and solar battery) independently. So to turn on any function, say display, you need to stick on enough solar labels onto the rear cover to power it. The more functions of the phone you want to use, the more solar stickers you need to paste on the rear. The idea is to make you conscious of the amount of toxic waste being accumulated due to improper disposal of electronic gadgets, our greed for upgrades and the amount of energy we consume to power our stuff. Essentially you can use this concept for a variety of gadgets. A noble cause, an excellent idea, but too cumbersome to follow! Designers: Shao Wei Huang, Chia-Yi Cho, Yu Pei Kuo & Chung Kai Chiang |
Ten Classic Concept Watches On Yanko Design Posted: 23 Sep 2009 07:57 AM PDT Shame on me! I've been a die-hard Omega Constellation fan all this while and have never looked beyond it. This was till I discovered the treasure trove of watches, right here on Yanko! My mistake, coz I'm not a watches-fetish-kinda-person. I stumbled upon the treasure here, while hunting for something inspirational for my husband, and boy is he going to enjoy this post! Come recount with me some really AWESOME Concept Timepieces, as classy and classic as YD! 10) Elio - Linear Scale Watch by Pierre Haulot & William Boullier Elio Linea is a very contemporary design that uses linear scale (like a computer downloading gauge) to tell the time. 9) eCO2 Watch by James Kershaw & Chad Garn Portraying itself as a Carbon Dioxide Scrubber, the eCO2 is one of the green concepts that wants to look as stylish as ever! The sporty look hides vents to take in the bad bad CO2 and expels O2. 8 ) Timeflex - Stick On Watch by Igor Solovyov & Maria Solovyova Totally fictional, but still an awesome deal, imagine a stick on disposable watch, the kinds that you slap onto the back of your palm during your Yoga classes and then discard! Brilliant idea but too farfetched! 7) Spinning Time Concept Watch by Glen Adkins An oxymoron for a watch, the Spinning Time Concept doesn't give you the time accurately. Instead the hours and the minutes get rounded off to nearest tenths. Cool for tardy people like me! 6) Swatch Air Tube Watch by Laurence Dawes Sleek and living up to Swatch's reputation of style, this Air Tube Watch concept is futuristic all the way. Based on air tube you find in most bicycle pumps, it juxtaposes two existing products in a contemporary fashion. 5) i/o Concept Watch For Women by Robin Lapo Bigio & Olivero Zanon Retarding the notion that hi-tech watches are for men, this awesome looking i/o Concept is an uber-cool fashion accessory for us ladies. Bangle, bracelet watch! 4) Nixon Watch by Lysandre Follet Can't hang up the games? No worries when you have concepts like the Nixon to incorporate quick games of Tetris and Pong Forever. 3) F1/Carbon GMT by John Pszeniczny Priceless Gem! Inspired by the F1 race car world and constructed of carbon fiber, Swarovski crystal, rubber and metal, this timepiece has 18 identical rubies and tells the time in everyone of the 18 cities on the 2008 F1 circuit. With a built in lap timer function and a stopwatch, time will seem to stand still as it races by at relative speed…which is 42. 2) M60M Watch by Roger Kellenberger A watch with no face! Amusing and very interesting! M60M features rotating disc instead of traditional hands to show the time. 1) Luna Watch by John Pszeniczny Another gem by John Pszeniczny, this crystal, stainless steel and Spessartite Garnet creation re-defines classy looks in watches. To tell time, just touch the two contact points and time seems to magically float inside the crystal. |
