Blind Phone with Fashion

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 05:45 AM PDT

So check it out. We’ve had several cells for the blind here at Yanko, and they’ve all been just lovely. This one, though, this one hits a sharper note. This one is closer to actual reality now, with the super simple 3D braille face, functionality and instant ease to produce go a long way. This one, Siwei Liu’s “Tactility” phone, uses technology we’ve already got today to make a phone that’ll be good at least until tomorrow.

And wouldn’t it just go with everything? It’s the real deal, too, you can tell by the little hole at the bottom there where you can loop a tie through to hang from you lanyard or belt or whatever else you do with that sort of thing.

Most important: it’d match my new full-body TRON outfit. That light on the side there… Trontastic.

Fictional Fantasy Is A Globule

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 04:56 AM PDT

Peugeot Globule is concept vehicle that is made up of four separate spheres that move together in a globule shape. Each sphere accommodates a single passenger and is individually powered by an electric motor. The four spherical parts are connected to a central battery and are contained within a very flexible polymer covering. The car has been designed on a self-assemble basis and can move in different arrangements. Like it can file the four spheres into a single line, to cross a narrow lane.

The car takes up only 130 cm x 130 cm space for parking by stacking up the spheres. The driver’s part is the only sphere in constant contact with the ground at all times.

Although we won't see the Globule anytime soon, it's always interesting to learn how designer's perceive our traffic scenarios of the future and the solutions that they offer.

An Emotional Phone

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 04:06 AM PDT

The more we get hooked to technology and cyberspace, the more we depend on them to reflect our moods and emotional status. One such device of the future is Gaia Phone and it promises to become your Identity. It's the kinda phone that supports a virtual wall full of pics of contacts in our phonebook and depending upon the strength of your relationship (detected by the number of calls to/from that person); it brightens or fades-out their photo. Not surprisingly, it comes to life with its master's touch!

A spectacular show of lights, sound and vibrations greet "a best friend's call, text message, a brother's new picture upload or status update, or a girlfriend's presence close by." As I mentioned earlier, this palm-sized device sports an infinite virtual 'Wall', which allows never-ending scrolling, and zooming using multi-touch screen technology. Statuses, pictures, news feeds get updated automatically and inform you via lights and vibrations.

I'm all for these "emotional" gadgets, but somehow nothing can replace a warm, vocal, real life greeting with an emoticon or lights!

Clinking Bottles No More

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 03:35 AM PDT

A drinks caddy need not fall under ID but a functional twist to the design, definitely warrants a mention. I'm talking about the W310 WAVE Drinks Caddy, an ideal basket to transport your precious bottles of sodas and wine from point A to point B. The outer wave structure makes it easy to fit the basket in the boot of a car. However the coolest part is the inner bottle-separator that holds each bottle in its place, therefore no clinking, clashing of glass.

The strong, sturdy handle is ergonomically designed and positioned at the center of the caddy for maximum comfort. What I also like about it is that you can dump some ice between the bottles to chill them on the go. I know we have icebox coolers for that, but how many of them can easily transform between a drinks caddy, a newspaper holder and a pot for your plants, as this?

Someone Shaved My Seat Tonight

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT

I was looking at this project and thought, wowie! That’s cute! It’s a stool made of birdseed, I wonder what happens when the birds get done eating it? But then I realized that ITS MADE OF SAWDUST. The environmentalness and green-ery of this project makes my eyes bleed. Bleed right out of my head!

And I love resin!

The Wood Industry uses a lot of wood. Imagine that. And in using a lot of wood, they inevitably come up with a bunch of sawdust. Lots and lots of sawdust. That sawdust, normally trashed, is mixed with a resin and pressed into a mold that contains the legs of the future stool.

…the opportunity was exploring new ways of integration between the legs of the furniture and the sawdust through expansion of the joints, this and the way the sawdust crumbles toward the edges creates a new material esthetics to once destined to be waste material.

Cool beans!

Enjoy the Arc

Posted: 14 Sep 2009 12:00 AM PDT

The beautiful Arc is a shower system that transcends from the normal "shower mode" to the "energy-saving mode", effortlessly. In the eco avatar, it recycles the warm shower water on the spot so that you feel less guilty for indulging in a hot-luxury-rinse. What I don't get is the hue and cry people make over wasting water in the shower, when we have film-makers squander precious liters in a parched city just to shoot a Tsunami scene, now that's criminal wastage!
